Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Lexmark's X125 is a compact, self-contained multifunction device for your printing, scanning, and faxing needs, and most of your copying needs as well. The scanner uses a feed-through device instead of a flat bed, so pages pass through one-by-one. You can scan them into your PC or make copies in black-and-white or color without a PC. The X125 looks much like an enlarged fax machine, and indeed provides full fax facilities, including speed dial and memory storage for up to 70 numbers.

Paper feeds from a near-vertical tray at the rear to a long pullout tray at the front. Above this is a second (clip-on) tray that catches pages as they exit the scanning mechanism. The machine uses old-style, high-capacity cartridges, which are easy to fit and clip into place.

A two-line LCD eases setup by directing you to, for example, align the machine's print heads before installing the driver software. The bundle includes photo editing and OCR software as well as facilities for faxing. These utilities install easily, but the driver isn't as user-friendly as those typically supplied with the more consumer-oriented printers, lower in Lexmark's price range.

In our tests, printed output was generally good, with sharp black text and finely detailed color prints. Resolution is high at 2,400 dpi, but we could still see fine dots in areas of variable shading. The print times, particularly for text, were low, with a five-page text document printing in just over a minute. Photo printing, at the best quality, took nearly 3 minutes.

Color copies weren't that effective, losing definition and bleaching some colors, particularly magenta tones. While they would be okay for quick copies intended for personal use, they would probably not be appropriate for giving to customers.

As a multifunction device, the X125 is functional and well-designed. It has some restrictions, most noticeably an inability to scan from books or magazines because it is sheet-fed, but still provides printing, scanning, copying, and faxing in one compact device at a good price. --Simon Williams, Amazon.co.uk

1.0 out of 5 stars Ink will eat you alive!, January 11, 2003
This review is from: Lexmark X125 All-in-One Office Center (13H0180) (Office Product)
Canon is the best deal. The print head and ink are different pieces. Plus they offer models with 2, 4, or 6 ink tanks and their branded ink is very reasonable. Personally, I use aftermarket ink in the Canon with great results. HP is okay too, but their newer models have gone to the combined printhead making even the aftermarket ink solutions more expensive.

Why does it matter if a company combines the Ink with the Print head? $$$

Lexmark is really trying to eliminate any chance of consumers using aftermarket cartridges.

Here is my opinion, for what it is worth ..... Lexmark produces compatible cartridges for HP laser printers, but they don't want anyone to remanufacture cartridges for their laser printers...Now what's your thought on that?

As for Lexmark inkjet printers they put their printhead on the cartridge and a patent on their printhead, this is to eliminate the compatible ink market. You the consumer can buy less expensive refilled compatible cartridges or you can buy the Lexmark brand for the Lower Price for a 2-Pack - - What a bargain! That's why they can't give their printers away anymore.

Buy a Canon. It is by far the most bang for the buck in the long run, due to ink costs.

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay product., January 26, 2004

This unit is fairly acceptable, and since I did not pay much for it, i'm not too worried about what it can and can't do.

Anyways, primarily purchasing this unit in order to fax documents, I find that it faxes acceptably, but in order to receive faxes (if you don't have separate phone lines), I've found that it is not very reliable.

Also, as one reviewer stated, the Lexmark Settings Utility program does not exit quietly when shutting down Windows XP.

The "Scan" feature is OK. However, if you are looking for a scanner, I do NOT suggest the paper-feed scanners, I suggest the scanners that have the open-up top. We used to have one of those, but it broke and we had to buy a new one. This scanner has ripped a hole in two of my pictures when I scanned it. Also, it can only scan certain dimensions. For example, to scan a regular devoloped picture I had to attach the picture to a piece of paper and then insert it into the scanner. Thus, if you have small documents you'd like to scan, I suggest you just get a regular flip-top scanner. Also, sometimes when scanning a picture, I have found that the scanner does not provide an accurate color scan. Some of my pictures have been messed up badly when scanned onto the computer, and when editing them with Jasc Paint Shop they did not seem to come out any better. Even more reason to get a flip-top scanner which seems to give a better scan.

The "copy" feature is fairly well, as stated above you cannot copy documents under a certain dimension.

When printing, the printer has never jammed but some of the documents have been tilted due to the sloppy input mechanism thing.

ALSO, the ink is VERY expensive. I buy re-furbished ink and find I am still paying too much. The ink is also not that easy to replace for the first time (you have to pull out on the cartridges and when I first did it, I felt I was going to break the ink mechanism).

That's about it, I really do not recommend this printer for full use. I primarily use my HP Laserjet Printer for documents, and only use this color printer for items such as greeting cards.

I hope you found this review to be informative and helpful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid, December 19, 2003
This review is from: Lexmark X125 All-in-One Office Center (13H0180) (Office Product)
I agree with what others say about this unit: avoid it. In fact, I bought a Canon replacement and will install it when the ink cartridges on the Lexmark go empty. Why? The printer does occasionally jam (paper feeding is sloppy, jerky), the driver/software does crash once in awhile and does not gracefully exit Windows XP when I shut down my computer, the ink cartridges are extraordinarily expensive, and the print quality is--at best--mediocre.

I didn't pay much for this thing, so I'm willing to eat my losses instead of buying more cartridges.
