5.0 out of 5 stars Lexmark 7350 All in all a great buy!, May 17, 2006
This review is from: Lexmark X7350 All-in-one with USB Cable (Office Product)
I purchased this machine through staples.com (I had a 30 dollar off coupon and it was cheaper than amazon, plus staples shipping is free and the machine comes the next business day(I've had problems with amazon shipping - But thats a whole different story) On to the review:

I did a lot of research into which printer to buy - I wanted a printer\Scanner\Copier\Fax for home use. My price range was around 150 or less. I decided on the lexmark because of several reasons

1: Speed. This thing is significantly faster than any similarly priced machine hands down. Despite what these companies say are the actual speed ratings we all know that they are wayyy exxagerated. I tested an epson, Hp and brother in the same price range and this printer was at least twice as fast as any of them (Both Color and Black and white)

2: Automatic document feeder. Most if not all of the printers available for under 200 dollars do NOT have an ADF. It comes in extremely handy for larger copy or scan jobs. PLus it allows you to easily copy or scan legal size paper.

3: Ease of use and controls - The printer is very easy to use, intuitive and the controls are laid out very well. All options can easily be changed and navigated through the control panel on the printer. In short, The controls are simple, easy to navigate, and laid out well. it also lets you shring or enlarge copies from 25% - 400% which is a nice feature some others do not have.

4: Software: NOw dont get me wrong I am an IT manager and I know software and computers better than most, there are definitely a few bugs with the software. It is slightly problamatic with the install, and it is a little buggy. Now with that said once it is up and running it is very good. IT easily helps you print out whatever kind of document you want whether it be photo, B&W, color, envelopes, labels etc. The ocr (Text recognition software) is flawless. Unlike the competitors software you can easily scan to word, pdf, or many other file types. In short again the software is a little finicky but excellent nonetheless.

It is feature packed, very easy to use, and better than most others I've seen.

5: photo print cartridge: I realize several other printers offer this option but it is great to be able to remove the black ink cartridge and print 6 color photos. The photo quality is obviously significantly better than any printer which does not have the option.

6: This printer lets you print on any kind of fomrat you want. It expets any kind of paper, transparencies, labels, etc. Some of the other comparable units do not handle all of the fomrats this guy does.

I have tried and tested most options on this printer including printing, faxing, scanning, copying etc as well as a lot of the software's capabilities. This printer for the price is a great machine. I think the problem with a lot of the bad reviews for lexmarks stem from one of two things. A lot of people are expecting this thinkg to perform wayy better than what this price point allows. You are buying a 150$ all in one, youre not going to get the features\speed\quality of a 400$ machine. This machine far exceeds my expectations for such a low cost machine. Users do not know how to properly install the software and are so upset that it is a little problamatic that they give this printer a bad review.

I have had no problems sending or receiving faxes, or with any other aspect of the machine other than a slight install issue. I have not had a need to call customer service so I can not comment on that, and as far as the machine itself I think as compared to other printers in this range it seems to be well made, sturdy, a good size and nice looking.

If you dont want to spend more than 200$ and you are planning to use this machine for light office or regular home use then I think this is your best bet!

4.0 out of 5 stars This my favorite Lexmark, April 24, 2006
This review is from: Lexmark X7350 All-in-one with USB Cable (Office Product)
I setup my Lexmark 7350 [...] today that I purchased from QVC as a Today's special. This is my fourth Lexmark ink jet and by far the best. As advertised it is indeed about 30% smaller in footprint and height than my old Lexmark x83 All in One, and 3 times faster. It does not have a card reader or color photo preview LCD window like the more expensive Lexmark 8350, however I do not miss not having those items at all because my other Lexmark, a 915,has those features.

[...]

Since all of my printers are on my network, it doesn't matter which one I slip a photo card in, also I have a card reader on my PC. But for those that want a stand alone (no connection to a PC), or don't have access to a photo card reader on their PC, this printer does have a Pict bridge connection if you have a camera with one. You will need to use the cable that came with you camera to use the Pict bridge port. Or again, you can buy the more expensive Lexmark X8350 to get a card reader built in. The two printers are identical with the exception of this feature. However the Lex 915 is running for about $60 right now (check HSN.com) so you could really afford to buy the 915 AND the 7350 for the cost difference between the 7350 and the 8350, just shop around.

It was easy to connect and the LCD line reader is nice and bright with a blue background for easy reading.

Photos print the same quality as my Lexmark 915, which is pretty darn good for a home ink jet, except it does it 2 times faster! For best results use Lexmark or Kodak photo papers. I have used other photo papers on my older Lexmark's; the quality was good, but moved to great when I used Kodak or Lexmark paper. Also you have to remove the black ink cartridge and insert the Lexmark Photo ink cartridge to get the best quality 6 ink photo prints. If you do this you will get good shadows, highlights, and true color quality. Trust me; don't skimp on the ink even if you skimp on the paper. Unlike Lexmarks in the past, the costs of ink cartridges are less expensive, around 24.99 for standard and 34.99 for high yield. But a savvy shopper can find deals to purchase them for less than that (i.e. coupons, buy one get one 50% off, etc.) I find it is cheaper to print the bulk of my photo prints online (i.e. Walmart.com) and save my home photo printing for 5X7 and 8X10 enlargements, and the occassional need of a duplicate print this will make your ink last a lot longer.

The B&W print speed is so much faster it is not even fair to compare it to my other Lexmarks. I have notice it shakes my print table a little when its printing, but I think this is because its going so dang fast. :) It doesn't affect the print quality at all.

On the fax features, it can be used stand alone or with a PC. If you have voice mail through your phone company you will need indenta ring service (this gives you a phone number with a different ring that uses the same phone line as your existing phone number. Sometimes you can get it as part of a pick three or pick five service, so check with your local telco (telephone company) to see if you can switch out and get this feature at no additional charge) to use the Auto Answer feature without the fax picking up before your phone company's VM. Or you can turn off Auto Answer (or increase the ring to answer setting to be more rings than it takes for your telco VM to pick up) and just answer manually when you know a fax is coming. Basically it will depend on your needs. If you only receive faxes occasionally and know in advance when someone is sending it, that manual route should work fine for you. Both ways the fax works like a charm, and the print is pretty clear as far as faxes goes.

The Lexmark software is similar to that past generations, but that is cool, if it is not broken why fix it? Basically you can fax from your PC, do some basic photo editing and manage documents from the PC. Overall it is very user friendly.

The scanner works great! Very good resolution, but to be honest Lexmark perfected scanning a couple of product generations ago. Their scanners give a good depth of field allowing 3D objects to show shadows, etc. quite well. Very important if you sell items online, scrapbook, etc.

All in all I would give this a thumb up, good buy! Just remember to slide the paper catcher all the way out, it is so fast that if you don't you will come back and find your print output on the other side of the room!!

The only con is that you must also remember to slide the paper catcher back in when you are done if this is to be in a high traffic area, otherwise someone might walk into it and break it or worst, cause your printer to slide off the printer stand or desk. I think Lexmark designers should have taken this into consideration since more and more families are moving the PC into the den so they can watch what their teenagers are doing online. This is the only reason why I'm not giving it Five stars. If you do not have these concerns (i.e. Setup will be in your home office / craft room in a low traffic pattern area) then I would give it Five stars.

The QVC version came with the USB cable, Phone line, color and B&W print cartridges, Lexmark software, plus four or five other software CDs such as Scrapbook Creator, etc. I usually donate these to my local elementary school so I haven't opened them.

All in all, I think the average home user, photo printer or crafter will enjoy this printer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fast, but not robust, scanner, January 30, 2007
This review is from: Lexmark X7350 All-in-one with USB Cable (Office Product)
I've been using Lexmark X7350 for about two months. I've used it extensively to scan piles of A4 papers (using the ADF) and to scan books of various sizes.

1) Quality. I've found the quality of the text scanning is excellent (I use Scansoft Omnipage 15 and not the software that comes with it). You see clear text background and well shaped characters. However it's bad when it comes to handwritten documents in pencil.

2) Speed. It's fast. Much faster than many Canon scanner e.g. Canon MP110. It takes about 10 seconds to scan a document at 300 dpi.

3) Software. The worst scanner I've ever seen. For example you can scan directly to PDF but you can't see the scanned pages until the creation of the PDF. That means you can't rescan a page individually. Also after a paper jam you have to restart the whole job process. The software doesn't save anything in this case. This is what the case with Scansoft Omnipage 14 or 15.

However it wasn't a robust machine for me. After a month of extensive use the scanner head (the part under the glass that moves to scan the paper) started to move incorrectly making the scanning output with distortions such as very dark or zigzagged letters. I had to send the machine for repair. After repair some of the problems remain. Now I'm thinking of buying a more robust scanner.
