Indeed, one can do a lot from the control panel, including checking ink levels, enlarging up to poster size, and adjusting the machine's settings. However, the LCD is not easy to read and has no backlight, so you'll need a good room light source.
Paper feeds from a bin at the back of the machine through to an output tray that slides out from the front. You place your original on the glass of the X85's flatbed scanning engine. There's no multisheet feeder, so you'll have to copy page by page, but copy times are quite reasonable, even in color.
In our tests, print quality was generally very good, with precise, dense black text and well-reproduced colours. There are two photo print modes, photo and max photo, but for most purposes the much quicker photo mode will be sufficient. There was little obvious difference in the printed output, although dithered sections of fine tone were marginally improved. Print times varied between good, for straight text prints (a five-page text document finished in just over 1.25 minutes) and extremely sluggish (a 3-by-5-inch photo in max photo mode, which took just under 8 minutes).
Despite the low-contrast LCD and slow photo printing time, the X85 is a good general-purpose multifunction device, offering strong software support that is ideal when space is at a premium. --Simon Williams
Now you can achieve brilliant resolution of up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi when printing on photo paper. The X85 also features up to 2,400 x 1,200 dpi in black and color on all paper types, offering the option of generating vibrant, photo-quality output on other media, such as card stock, transparencies, and iron-on transfers. The X85 prints up to 12 pages per minute (ppm) in black and up to 6 ppm in color, and supports both Windows and Macintosh platforms.
Ready to handle traditional photographs and books of varied thickness, the X85's flatbed scanner (with removable lid) offers 600 x 1,200 dpi optical resolution, 48-bit color scan depth, and up to 19,200 dpi enhanced resolution. The X85 delivers up to 99 copies from one original and has a zoom range of 25% to 400% for reducing and enlarging images. The unit produces up to 10 copies per minute (cpm) in black and up to 3 cpm in color.
Scan-to-PC fax capability offers fully functional black and color fax applications. Easy-to-use software lets you edit, store, send, and receive documents via fax through your computer's fax modem. Other Lexmark features include the exclusive Lexmark Accu-Feed paper-handling system, which virtually eliminates paper jams and misfeeds so you can use print media up to 150 pounds; convenient ink-level indicators; and a user-friendly interface that makes it easier than ever to set up and enjoy all of the unit's capabilities.

THE LAST PRINTER or SCANNER I'LL EVER BUY,
By Happy Mom (Yorktown, Va United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lexmark X85 Inkjet All-in-One (10K0500) (Office Product)
This is my 3rd Lexmark printer in the last 3 years - i've upgraded all my previous printers because of my growing experiences with computers, digital cameras, etc. Every one of my Lexmark printers I've been pleased with the speed, quality and performance - never had a single problem. I started looking at replacing my Z53 when I realized I needed a scanner (and a copier would be nice also). This Lexmark Z85 All-In-One printer had the most and best options (ie - computer doesn't need to be turned on to make copies). this printer is fast, has excellent quality, and has all i'll ever need and more. Also, it's not eating the ink cartridges - I do alot of "photo" pictures and the ink levels are hardly being touched - very pleased with how long the cartridges are lasting. The on-screen ink level guides is also nice. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT - WORTH EVERY PENNY!!

It works well with XP. The color quality is great. I've enlarged pictures and the color is the same as the original photo. Also I like the new features. Quick print and it has a maximum photo setting. Plus the reduce and enlarge features.

AWESOME PRINTER,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lexmark X85 Inkjet All-in-One (10K0500) (Office Product)
I am so happy with this machine. It scans very quickly, I think the quality is great for a home based printer. This machine replaced my HP PHOTOSMART that I bought less than a year ago, the HP was nothing but hassles. I HIGHLY recommend this printer!
