The Lexmark Z42 offers 2,400 x 1,200 dpi resolution with thermal ink-jet technology, prints up to 10 pages per minute for black and five pages per minute for color, and is PC and Mac compatible. Plus, one-click printer driver software means that installation is quick and easy.

We set up the Lexmark Z42 according to the quick setup instructions, inserting the cartridges, connecting the printer, and installing the software. The setup process includes a useful cartridge alignment test, which allows you to make adjustments to find the optimal cartridge positions. In testing the printer, we found that it prints black text documents at about five pages per minute when connected to our PC's parallel port and 10 pages per minute using the USB connection. It took about two minutes to print a 122 KB color JPEG image, which is typical for this type of printer over a parallel connection. Among the Z42's better features is the print status window, which measures the elapsed printing time, although we could do without the You've-Got-Mail-like voice that informs you when printing has commenced and ended.

I purchased the Lexmark Z42 as an upgrade for my photo printing since it had the 2400x1200 bpi density. Unbeknownst to me, my husband bought the HP 932C, equivalent density. We tested them both at home. For photo quality printing the HP 932C performed exponential better. For the price (what I've seen) the Lexmark Z42 was better (~35% lower).

This is a great printer for this price. Great color and clear text. The only problem is the cartiges are expensive.

Excellent value and takes almost no time to setup. Print @ high speed or laser quality. Good warranty program. What more can you ask for? I purchased one for my mother and one for me. We have both been more than pleased.
