I purchased the Lexmark Z42 as an upgrade for my photo printing since it had the 2400x1200 bpi density. Unbeknownst to me, my husband bought the HP 932C, equivalent density. We tested them both at home. For photo quality printing the HP 932C performed exponential better. For the price (what I've seen) the Lexmark Z42 was better (~35% lower).

This is a great printer for this price. Great color and clear text. The only problem is the cartiges are expensive.

Excellent value and takes almost no time to setup. Print @ high speed or laser quality. Good warranty program. What more can you ask for? I purchased one for my mother and one for me. We have both been more than pleased.

The ink cost more than the printer! Although it is rather fast for the price and was pleased with it initially, we now have problems with it. It locks up the computer and often won't even print. This may be a problem somewhere else in the system, but either way, the cartridges for this thing are so [] expensive you might as well save the money and buy a more expensive printer with cheaper cartridges. i would not recommend this to anybody! it is a stupid buy. ... With that amount of money, we could have bought a brand new photo printer. As a matter of fact, when it came to buy ink for the second time in a few months, we said forget and bought a whole new printer, a canon...

I have written a review and have neglected to mention that;#1, I don't feel the Z42 to be excessive in ink usage, and #2, if you feel the cartridges to be expensive, you can purchase refill kits [for cheaper]...

I Purchased my Z42 Lexmark about 9 months ago from Amazon. I have been looking at other printers recently, and frankly, I don't see many out there which can do better for the money! Although the Z42 is probably harder and harder to find, I am sure that the Z43, is quite similar. For someone on a budget, Buy it! I have used it with my Canon A20 And more recently with my Canon S40. It is always dependable and gives very good results for the price! I would definately reccommend it!

i guess you get what you pay for. i bought this printer when i was in a bind with little money to spend. i wish i had spent the extra 40 bucks or so to get a decent epson. actually, nowadays, you can get a great epson for a comparable price to this class of lexmarks!

this printer had no internal memory and it's like a turtle on downers when it comes to print speed, despite what it claims. i NEVER got it to print text at over 2 pages per minute. NEVERMIND high quality. printing at high quality from adobe illustrator or photoshop took an average of 20 minutes per page! this was maddening! as a freelance graphic artist, i have worked with and recommended many printers to my clients. at <$150, i love the epson color 880. fast and accurate and cheap. the printer software for lexmark is SO AWFUL that it alone should convince you to go with another manufacturer, like epson or HP.

i now use an HP 990cxi, purchased from amazon. it is close to $300 and is excellent. if you must stay in the lower price range though, check out HP and epson instead. the only reason i even gave this 2 stars is because i am giving it to my mother-in-law and i am sure it will be fine for printing her emails and word documents. anything more, choose another company!

This printer is much crisper and faster and quieter than my epson stylus and my last epson c40 printer. It has been very reliable. The customer service is great as well!! Lexmark is the bomb.

I have had this printer for over 1 year and it has never caused me one problem.The printing speed with color can be slow but the finished quality is great.I have had an Epson,Cannon and HP printers with the exception of the Hp the other broke down and were nothing but problems.The Usb connection hooked up easy and was no problem at all.If you need a good printer this is the one to get....................Gary

My ageing Canon printer finally "bit the dust" several months ago, and I was anxious to replace. Having worked with the more commercial "laser" versions of HP and Lexmark printers, I reviewed price / performance, making sure to consider consumable costs, ability to print on multiple paper types and sizes, etc. The Lexmark Z42 won hands-down. Easy to use, easy to change cartridges, good support and reliability are all attributes that this little workhorse brings to the table.

My first "cartridge change" exposed me to Lexmark's support via their "chat client". I had a defective cartridge, contacted Lexmark, who walked me through problem determination and then resolved the problem, and sent a replacement cartridge. Good experience.

The printer seems to handle most all paper types, and easily prints labels and envelopes. I've also used the printer to produce high-quality images on photo paper.

Perhaps the only down side are the printer drivers. When I first installed, I used Win98, and was happy with the driver. When I converted to WinXP, I had a few problems, which required download of additional drivers (which have been updated since then). There is some loss of functionality from Win98 to WinXP drivers.

Overall, the printer is a good value and recommended!
