The Lexmark Z55SE offers an ideal balance of speed and performance, making it a great choice for those who need to print text in a hurry or produce high-resolution color photos.

The unit is simple to install via a USB port, although no USB cable is supplied in the box. Included in the box are an easy-to-use CD-ROM containing the necessary drivers, and two ink cartridges--one for black and one for cyan, magenta, and yellow. Onscreen installation instructions are intuitive, and the two ink cartridges clip easily into place. Within five minutes you can be up and running.

The Z55SE offers up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi resolution and quotes speeds of up to 17 ppm for monochrome and 13 ppm for color. These speeds are ambitious even for draft quality. However, text output is prompt, and when you raise the quality settings, the output is crisp with solid blacks.

Color photos require several minutes, but on high-quality paper, the results are sharp with little noticeable banding. The highest-quality setting does use a lot of ink, so it's worth experimenting with the settings, as dropping the quality a notch does produce quicker, more economical prints.

The Lexmark Z55SE is solidly constructed for its class. It comes with a mature driver that helps you maximise its capabilities and produces great results. While offering a step up in performance over Lexmark's value models, the Z55SE is still affordable, making it a great choice for the home. --Jason Weston

The Z55se gives you print speeds up to 17 ppm black and 13 ppm color. You'll also enjoy up to 4,800 x 1,200 dpi (5.8 megapixels) on photo paper, coated paper, and transparencies (4,800 x 600 dpi on plain paper). Automatic Cartridge Alignment eliminates the need for manual alignment. An optical sensor reads the alignment page and automatically updates printer settings.

Variable drop size dramatically increases the quality of the output. The 3pL drops are for highly detailed areas, while the 10pL drops provide better fill in solid color areas. The printer driver automatically switches between the drop sizes.

With Automatic Paper Type Sensing, the printer automatically recognizes different paper types and adjusts the printer settings for optimal print quality. The printer's Accu-Feed paper handling system virtually eliminates paper jams, while handling a wide range of media, from envelopes to paper stock (up to 150 pounds).

The printer also comes with a graphical user interface with Lexmark Solutions Center and onscreen ink-level indicators.

Very nice printer. I like the versatility USB or parallel port connections. Good printing speed. Easy interface good quality prints. Ink storage a bit on the small side for Lexmark. Refills a bit pricey (but aren't they all). Easy to set up and use.

I was excited to buy this printer for my daughter, but was disappointed that the box did not contain the usb cable or the ink cartridges. The addition of buying these items made it an over-priced piece of futility. I won't buy from this site anymore.
