This printer has one cartridge; not a black one, but a color one. If you want to print black, it squirts all 3 colors. Spend a few bucks more upfront to save from getting ripped off month-after-month in ink.

According to my web searches, the cartridge has a total of 21 mL (milliliters) of cyan, magenta, and yellow ink. If your printer doesn't have a separate black cartridge, this will be equivalent to a 7 mL black cartridge, since it squirts all three colors at once. For an example, the HP #56 has 19 mL of black for around $20. By the time you buy 3 Lexmark cartridges for a total of $60, you could have saved almost $40 by owning a more expensive HP, assuming they squirt proportionally.

Don't get me wrong, if you print 10 pages per month, it might be ok, but if you print any small volume, you will be gouged.

For people who don't print that often, or if you just need an extra printer, this is a great deal. As stated by other reviewers, the output isn't amazing, but it's fine for home-office use. This is very much a "you get what you pay for" sort of printer - no frills, no extras. In some ways, that's an enormous plus, it's simple to operate, and just as easy to own.

Contrary to Brian Morris' rather useless comment (it's clear he doesn't own the printer), the single-cartridge system is actually very handy. You don't need to worry about the ink levels in two cartridges, and replacements are fairly cheap, at less than $20/ cartridge in most stores. Plus, the replacement cartridge is "Lexmark Cartridge No. 1" so much easier to remember when walking into an office-supply store than the jumble of letters and numbers used by other makers. Yes, I agree a dual-cartridge system can be more efficient, but it also makes everything twice as complicated, and simplicity is what matters here. My 85 year old grandparents are 100% satisfied and comfortable using this printer. I think that says volumes.

In short - if you do a lot of printing look elsewhere this is not the model for you. Ditto if you want outstanding image quality, or are printing a lot of photos. But then... it's $35. So what would you expect? However, if you're using your printer fairly infrequently, and aren't too picky about image quality, this is perfect. It's also a great choice as a backup, or for young kids.

Just be sure to buy a spare cartridge, the one supplied with the printer is only 30-40% full from the factory. It'll run out fairly quickly. Also - you'll need to supply your own USB cable.

My five star rating takes the very low price into account. The software is intelligent and user friendly; audio output supplements what you see on screen. When you turn the computer off the printer turns off as well making the cartridge last longer. Set-up and software installation is easy. Output while not top photo quality is quite acceptable for a utility home printer. The single cartridge is economical also.

I believe a good point to include in the product specs would be that it is NOT compatible with Mac products.

This single cartridge printer is a good buy. Produces a deep black at a reasonable cost per page. Paper feed is a bit loud, but print speed is impressive for a sub fifty dollar unit.

This printer is a great deal for the price. I needed a color printer for my office and said why not. Last year I bought a Lexmark All-in-One Printer, Scanner, and Copier for my daughter who is in college and she loves it. The cost to operate it is so cost effective compared than other printers close to its price range. Last year my old faithful HP at my home office wore out so replaced it with a new HP All-in-One Printer, Scanner, and Copier. Gee was I in for a wake up call. The new HP just drinks slurps up that ink not like my old faithful worn out HP. Guess ya live and learn. Ok on this Lexmark Z735 INKJET Printer I admit the HP does beat it in brighter colors if your picky, it more expense also. The Lexmark All-in-One Printer, Scanner, and Copier I gave my daughter then again has better print quality and the colors are brighter also cause it to is more expensive machine. I guess you get what you pay for but Lexmark used to be so much better quality than their printers of late are. This is the second Lexmark printer(2 different models) that I have purchased only to have to replace them within a year of only light to moderate home use for paper feed problems. I contacted Lexmark on it and their answer was to open up the printer, clean out the paper feed roller and that I really should be doing this on a regular basis! What a crock!! We have several HP printers at work and have used them for years without having to something like this. Lexmark is getting a reputation in the consumer reports of having paper feed problems. OK is you want to spend $30 or so and use it for a year and then replace it again. It prints nice before the paper feed messes up but then it's a totally worthless printer as it won't even let you manually feed the paper in...just won't pick it up no matter what you do. For $30 I don't think I should have to clean off the print roller with rubbing alcohol every couple weeks like Lexmark tech support recommended. Will not buy Lexmark ever again after having this happen 2 times on 2 different models now.

This is a very nice printer for the price. We liked it so much that we purchased another. It's perfect for home use or for places where you don't need a high volume printer. For quality, price and performace this printer can't be beat.

My previous Lexmark 3-in-1 printer/fax/copier died after about 6 years...leaving me with about $90 in ink cartridges I will now never use. I only print about 10 pages a month, and I don't believe you'll find a better "Value" than this little guy. The "ONE" cartridge, with Black and Color all in one unit for about $20 is a welcome relief too after being gouged for years on ink... which often dried up before I got a chance to use it. If I get 6 years out of this one, I'll be very pleased.
