Lexx - Giga Shadow [VHS]

Giga Shadow ends the Lexx movies. If you do not know Lexx or hate it, give the movies a chance. Starting with "I Worship His Shadow" and ending with this tape is a fine way to start enjoying Lexx. Is it high budget? No but does sport some impressive visuals and great actors portraying out of the norm characters. It is a good mix of sci-fi themes that tend to get ignored by the stoic shows. Sex, violence, gore, and just plain odd... Lexx is the hybrid of Red Dwarf (minus the sitcom) and a third world country blue movie set inside an insect. Giga Shadow is worth owning for repeated viewing.

I sorta joined the "Lexx" saga somewhat late, beginnig with the Fire/Water story line on the SCI FI channel. The quirky satire of the show immediately caught my fancy, and although as the show progressed it became even more outrageous and obsessed with sexual matters, I always made it a point to catch all the episodes or arrange that they be videotaped.

With a busy schedule it was difficult for me to catch up on the past episodes (other than what SCI FI had rerun), and I had always assumed that "Lexx" began as an hour-long series on SCI FI. That is, until I checked the local library for video loans, and was surprised to find out that the series had in fact originated as a "mini-series" of TV movies ("Tales From thr Parallel Universe") originally aired on Showtime.

The second surprise was discovering that Eva Halbermann had originally played the part of Zev prior to Xenia Seeberg (both actresses performing excellently). But the third surprise was that the quartet of TV movies was more "straight" science fiction, with an added twist of broad satire and comedy, as opposed the TV show which esentially evolved into the reverse, with the stir, comedy and sex becoming the ain thrust (no pun intended).

The "evolution" of Lexx certainly started (or accelerated) after the change from Halbermann to Seeberg on the TV show. In finally viewing the made-for-TV movies I have to admit that, without impugning the later "Lexx" TV episodes, I enjoyed the quartet of movies MUCH more, because they concentrated more on basic plot, premise and characterization, rather than worrying about what to satirize next.

I think anyone who enjoys (enjoyed) the "Lexx" series SHOULD love all four of these "Parallel Univese" movies, and perhaps even those who did NOT favor the series will nontheless appreciate these fine films.

Lots of action and a little humor thrown in for good measure. Kai, the dead assasin turned good guy to the rescue and yet vulnerable as his proto-blood supply slowly runs out. Xev, beautiful, strong, and sexy aids him in his quest for revenge and proto-blood. Stanley, a silly idiot doing the best he can, rounds out a full crew aboard the LEXX. The LEXX is a HUGE insect spaceship (it's a living ship) that has the capability to destroy entire planets with one well aimed shot. 790, a talking robot head, keeps everyone in line with his quips and quarreling with Stanley over luscious Xev. It's available in VHS and on cable tv on the SciFi channel on Friday night at 9:PM CST. I wouldn't recommend this show for kids under 13. The violence and sexual innuendo might be a little too strong for the emotionally delicate.

If you like Lexx: The Series, then you should not miss Giga Shadow, the fourth installment of 'Tales From a Parallel Universe'. It has everything you could ask for in a movie: humor, love, action, 3-D characters, awesome computer graphics and special effects. This movie is the new evolution of sci-fi shows. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting something unique!

Malcolm McDowell (of the Wing Commander live-action video games, Star Trek: Generations, and the short lived "updated" version of Fantasy Island) was supurb as the tortured man who is forced to become the one known as the Giga Shadow, who represents the end and the beginning of the cycle of shadows. The crew of the LEXX puts their two cents into the pot, allowing the prophecy involving Kai to come to pass.This final movie out of the shadow series served as a springboard for the main series, which is now available on DVD.

"The Gigashadow is the end of the beginning and the beginning of the end." intones the time prophet at the beginning of the video. This was a good episode, with some closure for his Divine Shadow, some explanation about why it was so integral for the Brunnen-G to end his order, and the end of the cluster. There's even a shower scene of Stan in this one--I suspect there would never be a shower scene of Kai, or more bizarre, 790. I liked the baby cluster lizard.

This show has it all! Sexy girl &cute guy, action, romance, everything!!

If you're the sort who love way out there sci-fi comedy then this is the show for you. It has great action, great acting, great costumes, and it's nicely unpredictable.
