I was introduced to this album for the first time when I went to Mexico. I bought it for 10 pesos and figured I'd have that as a souvenir. Upon listening to this CD, I was instantly hooked. The music is almost magical, the lyrics are powerful, and the celtic overtones work nicely. I am a huge fan of power rock (ie Iron Maiden, Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen, and the Scorpions) so this one sits proudly on my shelf next to them. I reccommend this CD for anyone who likes neo-classical/celtic metal. Even if you couldn't care less about it, check this CD out. You may like it. Also, please give it a chance; it's in Spanish. A lot of my friends do not like Mago de Oz because they sing in Spanish.

Originally released in 1998, La Layenda De La Mancha is the third album from Spanish folk metal band (yes, there is such a thing) Mago de Oz. I'm a recent disciple of this completely innovative and unique band, and have been feverishly acquiring their back catalog in recent months. Prior to picking up this album, I tried out the band's self-titled 1994 debut and was surprised at how rough and unformed it sounded. Fortunately La Layenda De La Mancha is much more like the Mago de Oz I'm used to.

The album, I'm told, is a conceptual piece based on the Cervantes novel El Quijote. Since the lyrics are entirely in Spanish, and my knowledge of that language is rudimentary at best, I'm not completely sure what these songs are about. I do, however, know good hard rock when I hear it, and La Layenda De La Mancha definitely qualifies. This is melodic hard rock (almost metal) that incorporates flutes, violins, and plenty of traditional Celtic elements for a unique rock experience that is equal parts Rainbow, Iron Maiden and Skyclad. Driving guitar rhythms are accented by infectious Celtic melodies, and there's a definite sense of storytelling, even if you can't understand the words.

It's not as polished or impressive as the band's later works (like Gaia or Gaia II), but La Layenda De La Mancha is still an outstanding folk metal album that any Mago de Oz fan should enjoy. For those new to Mago de Oz - you're in for a treat. Check out the audio samples of "El Templo del Adios", the band's Spanish language cover of the Rainbow classic "Temple of the King" and you'll get a pretty good idea of what Mago de Oz is all about.

La Leyenda de la Mancha is the second album of Mago de Oz. It is dedicated to the novelDon Quijote de la Mancha. To me is one of my favorites, although this is a heavy metal recording it has an harmonious sound and the lyrics are poetry. It is just a really good choice.
