5.0 out of 5 stars Battle of the Bands KINGS, November 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Liar Liar: Best of Castaways (Audio CD)
For those that rated them as the best Garage bands and others who don't understand, I think you have to understand the local music scene of the 60's. Other than Gregory D and the Avantes (Greg Mayland later joined the Castaways) they were the defacto kings of the music scene. At their height no one could touch them. What only older rock & roll fans remember are the Battle of the Bands where bands would compete for local honors. And I for one can't remember anyone topping them at any one of the many times I saw them. Hearing some of these songs in Stereo is pretty cool for those of us who have only heard them on a dusty 45. Feel so Fine, Hit the Road Jack and other lesser (national) known songs were regular plays on "Weegie" WDGY and I think pretty big hits in the area. What is fun is to hear them again and in such good quality. I guess to sum it up - If my best of the Castaways CD had groves they would be worn out. Now all I need is a best of Gregory D and the Avantes to make my day!

p.s. George Harrison (Former Beatle) re-released his All things must pass with 2000 remakes of a song or two and yes, it was a little disturbing to those of us who have memorized every iota of a song so I give the Castaways the same slack I give George. It's "interesting" but a little weird.

p.p.s. The Bad Hair Day song is a riot I've never heard it before so I don't know if I missed it the first time around or if it's a new recording. But Country Western from the Garage man kings????

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Garage band, May 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Liar Liar: Best of Castaways (Audio CD)
At long last,a "best of" collection of the Castaways, probably America's best garage band of the 60's.(With the possible exception of the Kingsmen,of course.)Who doesn't remember that falsetto shriek at the beginning of "Liar,Liar"?I would have given this 5 stars, but unfortunately, they included some lame newer material on the c.d.They even had the temerity to do "Liar,Liar 2000"!Overall,though,it's a great listen to an underreated band of the 60's.

1.0 out of 5 stars Now that I heard the tale of the Castaways, September 10, 2006
This review is from: Liar Liar: Best of Castaways (Audio CD)
I can honestly say that there were some real bad groups of the first garage band era. This was one of them. I didn't sample the 65 version of "Liar Liar" because I have already heard it before, and it's a dud. I first heard this on Sunday Oct. 7th, 1984 on the old Flashback show hosted by John Debellu. I guess being 16, and really enjoying the education that I was getting from learning about all these groups I had a blind spot. I thought originally that it was good because of the guitar solo I would imagine playing it, and having sparks of fire jump out of my guitar, and splashing onto the people who were mocking me because I was different to wear cowboy boots to high school. I had that fantasy for one afternoon, and to be honest by the end of the day the song no longer appealed to me. As did the rest of this album. It didn't do a thing for me, and with the exception of one song the rest is crapola. Even when it sounded like they would go off into different areas like surf music, folk-rock, country music, and horn band psychedelia they just didn't have the right stuff. They would get back together in the 90's-2,000 area, and I guess it was to show the new kids they could still play, and I guess they needed to play because of ailmony, and drug counselling, etc. I could picture the women in the group being overweight, and short hair, and the menfolk are bald, and have ulcers, and stuff like that. no matter how you listen to them they are just plain horrible.
