Editorial Reviews

Graham Chapman, probably best remembered as 'the dead on from Monty Python,' writes and stars in the animated movie of his own life story, A Liar's Autobiography. He was born, he went to Cambridge and met John Cleese, he smoked a pipe, he became a doctor, he became a Python, he decided we was gay (well, 70/30, according to a survey he did on himself), he got drunk a lot, he stopped being drunk, he made some films, he had some sex (actually, a lot), and moved to Los Angeles. Finally, he was whisked up to space by aliens (although that might have been in a film).

Although Chapman selfishly dropped dead in 1989, he had taken the trouble to record himself reading his book, A Liar's Autobiography - and those recordings have now ingeniously been used to provide Chapman's voice for the animated feature of the same name. Fellow Pythons John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam also turn up, playing themselves and other characters, along with a few surprise guests.

Not a documentary, not a Monty Python film, A Liar's Autobiography is Chapman's own take on his bizarre life and his search for self-knowledge. Incredible, yes. Surreal, certainly. True? Who knows?

Animation is expensive and time-consuming.

Format: DVD
This movie leaves much the same sense that I get from Salvador Dalí's autobiographical writing: that the literal truth of any part is open to question, but also irrelevant. Instead, this describes the creativity, the troubled life, and the brilliance Chapman expressed - and, in many ways, a simple factual rendering could never have done the job.

Part of this film's surreal sense comes from the fact that Chapman narrated it himself - more than twenty years after his death. He left a wealth of recordings describing his life, and those form the main narration (except for a few moments, like Cameron Diaz's rendering of Sigmund Freud).

Nearly all of the imagery is new, however. A few historical film clips appear, like John Cleese's hilarious eulogy, but nearly all of it's animated. And what animation! Chapman appears as Oscar Wilde in a puppet-like passage, his debauches appear in a stiking first-person view, his worst days of detox come to life in nightmare textures and tones, his family relations as a teen come back in drolly satirical renderings. Given the the complexity of Chapman's life, any one style would have under-served him badly.

It certainly helps to be a Monty Python fan, but don't treat that as requisite. This movie offers plenty to anyone who appreciates animation, and to anyone who wants to know more about this brilliant man.

Graham Chapman sensibly recorded for posterity the audiobook version of his autobiography - in which he quoted lots of lines originally spoken by his fellow Pythons. The makers of this animated feature have enhanced Graham's audio by employing the voice acting talents of those other Pythons to read their own quoted lines - and they do so brilliantly. No one is more qualified to play Graham Chapman than himself and he does not hold back from revealing the intense and at times shocking truth of his life. The stunning state-of-the-art 3D visuals were created by various teams of graphic artists as a labour of true love - and they proudly showcase what is wonderful about 3D, as much as they celebrate what is wonderful and unique about Graham Chapman. I have never witnessed a more intensely engaging biography - and the fact that it is a "no holds barred" autobiography is an added bonus. We are truly blessed that Graham existed in the first place and that these passionate talented film makers have so lovingly presented his story to us. (Note: I live in Australia and imported the Blu-ray 3D from Amazon UK - it's a great pity for those in the USA with "Region A" locked players, that this was not released as an "All Regions" disc)

This DVD is the story Graham Chapman's life. It is done in different animated styles by several animation studios. It has all of the silliness of the Monty Python flair and form. If you are not familiar with it or Chapman it can be confusing, but will still be interesting.

There are no subtitles, but many extras; 47 minutes of a documentary on Chapman, which will explain his life and style to those who do not know of him and solve any muddles that someone might have. There are also behind the scenes excerpts and a theatrical trailer.
There is some explicit adult humor in here and it includes Chapman's decision to reveal that he was "mostly gay".
Fans of Graham Chapman, Monty Python and the wonderful world they inhabit will enjoy this film.

Hmmm. Sometimes-fascinating but sometimes-boring pastiche of lots of different parts of Graham Chapman's life - some parts of it that aren't particularly interesting go on way too long, and some parts of it that are fascinating don't go into as much detail as I wished they would (I wish there was more about what it was like to be one of the Pythons). Fabulous and extremely varied animation.

I had the pleasure of seeing this film on Netflix, and was pleasantly surprised. Imagine, Graham Chapman staring in a new film 23 years after he died. Loved all the details (mostly figments from Chapman's fertile imagination) of the master's life brought before our eyes for us to abuse and ridicule. Enjoy!

I was disappointed to get a message on my PS3 that it wouldn't play due to the region coding of the player. The seller should make this more clear in the description.

It was certainly interesting and visually unusual, but I found it long and not very compelling in spite of the fact that I love Python and was interested in this telling of Graham Chapman's life.
