A Must Have,
By A Customer
This review is from: Liars (Audio CD)
Todd enchants us once again with a new sound on this conceptual piece. I think this is the best thing I've heard from him in many years. Some of the tunes are reminiscent of the "Hermit of Mink Hollow" days, while remaining modern and timely in subject matter. Several tracks have a Trip-Hop vibe. There are no clean breaks between cuts... all the songs are interesting and cohesive. My favorite so far is the song with the refrain, "I Stood Up Too Fast." I really can't hear it enough. Sounds like he dreamed it and recorded it right away so as not to forget the melody. Todd's voice has never been better. Can't wait to see these new tunes played live when Todd takes the band on tour later this year. This is a must buy for all TR fans, new and old.

A Great CD...that's not a lie,

Todd returns to old form...at least partially. This CD blends the 90's style Todd rhythm with 80's style Todd vocals. I have only listened to the whole CD once but it is a vast improvement over One Long Year. My favorite tracks are " Sweet " and " Flaw". Both really showcase Todd's unique vocal style. the production is flawless as usual but the disc lacks a lot of guitar work, being a guitarist that I tend to enjoy a healthy dose of guitar. Todd has given us a CD worth waiting 3 years for and a return to formulas that have made many of us diehard fans.

Todd's still breaking new ground,

It's taken me a few listens to digest Liars, but I love it. For all of those who appreciate Todd's song crafting abilities and lush production qualities, you'll love Liars. If you're looking for Todd to rock-out with alot of guitar laiden jams, this one isn't for you. If I'd have to compare this to any of his past works, I'd say it's a cross between the electronica of NWO and the concept of Healer. While I haven't yet seen the liner notes, there are pervasive themes throughout Liars. Truth, lies, life, death, future, past, spirituality, etc... It's heavy stuff. "Stood Up" remains my favorite song. It has a Hermit-like sound to it and is the closest thing to his late 70's sound I've heard in years. There are some nice, subtle songs like "Sweet", "Past", "Flaw" (assuming you overlook the mother f'er references), and "God Said." (get over yourself Todd!). There's not a bad song in the bunch and over 74 minutes of music to enjoy. It's hard to say that this is one of Todd's best because he breaks new ground on every disc. I think it's safe to say that Liars is one of his best works in the last 20+ years though. Get it!!!
