5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Compliments
I bought a set of these at Target last year and have received lots and lots of compliments on them! They're not only interesting to look at, but they're comfortable to use. The bottom is thick and sturdy. I have broken a few of them, but likely because I sent them flying. You can safely knock these over a few times before you lose one. Nice glassware set.

2.0 out of 5 stars glasses break spontaneously after 6 months
First, I'm not sure how many of these reviews are long-term or if we just got a "bad batch" of glasses. My initial reaction was that the cups were nice for the money. They are pretty obviously not great glasses, but considering the price, it was alright.

Now that we've had the cups for over 7 months, I'm complaining. Over the past 2 weeks, glasses...

5.0 out of 5 stars inexpensive , but look great, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Libbey Polaris Drinking Glasses and Tumblers, Set of 16 (Kitchen)
i love the flat bottom, as water doesn't collect in the dishwasher. they are slim, so they fit easily in the rack too. a great value, that looks great. 2 of the glasses were broken upon receipt. they were replaced right awy and no expense to return the broken ones!

These are very heavy feeling, nice looking glasses. Best of all since they are shipped by Amazon they are also elgible for free shipping (no filler for you Prime members).

One issue with these, if you normally stack your smaller glasses to save space, these you can't do it with.

I love these glasses!! My boyfriend recently complained about all of the mismatched glasses in our cupboards and our oversized dish set taking up too much room and how he'd like to just 'throw 'em all out' and start over, so of course - I took that as my invitation to do just that!

I must admit that although there are many positive reviews for this item, the one reviewer who wrote that these glasses looked cheap and were of poor quality did ride in the back of my mind as I anxiously awaited my order. I think I nearly tripped over myself rushing to get this package indoors to rip through the box. I was a little disappointed when I saw the photos on the box (they don't do the glasses any justice), but the moment I pulled the first glass out of the box I knew I had done good!! Beautifully shaped, no defects in the glass and a nice weight that make these glasses feel more expensive than they are. Even the pictures online do little justice to these glasses. The base looks a little frosted in the online photos, but that's just because of the white backdrop. Nothing but smooth, clear, glass. The boyfriend loves them too).

To the reviewer who wrote that these glasses look cheap and are of poor quality, I can only assume that you must have purchased glasses that were of similar style to these, but not the actual ones advertised here. These are quality glasses.

******UPDATE 10/27/2011*********
********************************

Just came back to repurchase a new set as a gift and was disappointed to see that the product is not currently available. I'm really surprised to see all of the negative reviews regarding the durability of these glasses. None of my glasses ever broke in the dishwasher at my apartment, when in transit from my apartment to my house by movers, as a result of being hand washed in the sink (current house doesn't have a dishwasher) or having guests or even young children handle them.

That said, I did lose a handful of these glasses over a period of a few months due to improper handling from a new roommate of mine. One broke because he left it balancing precariously on its side on top of a dish rack that he had overloaded, which later fell to the ground when he went to put his dishes away. Two others broke simply because he literally just 'dropped' them into the kitchen sink while walking by. Seriously. I actually witnessed him just casually 'dropping' one of my glasses, held out at arms length, into the sink!!! Of course I confronted him and according to him, he just wasn't paying attention. Obvious, because the sound of the glass hitting the inside of my metal sink didn't even phase him and had I not said something, he'd have just strolled right on out of the kitchen. Sometimes I wonder if that boy's on something...) and another two broke because he had rested them in the sink on their side and then piled a TON of dirty pots, pans and dishes on top of them. I was the one who discovered those two glasses broken after I decided to clean up his mess rather then wait for him to get around to it. Neither glasses were 'shattered' but had large cracks running down the length of them and fell apart when I went to pick them up.

Of course, he denies being the catalyst for my glasses suddenly breaking however... since I've restricted his use of household beverage containers to the cleaned out mason jars and plastic tumblers that I keep as backup for large parties (with the threat that he would need to buy me a replacement set of glasses if just one more broke) - my Libbey glasses have miraculously stopped breaking again.

While I realize there's the distinct possibility that something has changed with this product since I last purchased it, my own experience makes me question how many of these complaints stem from people like my housemate... He really, truly, sincerely does not believe that he's at fault for any of the glasses breaking - even when he was witness to the glass breaking as a result of his own actions (such as the case of the glass that fell over when he was putting away his dishes). I really just don't understand where he's coming from... I went years with these glasses never breaking, even in the hands of my boyfriends young children. I for one hope that regardless of what the issue is today (defective product or defective customers) - they figure out the problem, fix it, and get this product made available again. These are great glasses and I was really hoping to gift them to a few close friends for the holidays.

2.0 out of 5 stars glasses break spontaneously after 6 months, April 19, 2010

First, I'm not sure how many of these reviews are long-term or if we just got a "bad batch" of glasses. My initial reaction was that the cups were nice for the money. They are pretty obviously not great glasses, but considering the price, it was alright.

Now that we've had the cups for over 7 months, I'm complaining. Over the past 2 weeks, glasses have been mysteriously breaking left and right. We had a full set 2 weeks over and now are down to only 2 of our 8 tall glasses remaining and have lost a few of the small cups too. They're fine going into the dishwasher, then come out broken. Considering nothing has changed since we got the cups, it's like they've reached their life expectancy. To clarify, NONE of these broken cups were dropped/knocked over -- a few times, we'd simply put a glass down on a table or in the dishwasher and it just breaks.

Today and yesterday, I picked up 2 unbroken glasses and they each broke in my hands, leaving me holding a giant shard of glass with the other half of the cups on the table or in the sink. I'm a petite person and it's not like I've been working out. Currently, we have 4 broken glasses sitting on the kitchen island all from this week. Ridiculous.

Again, I'm not sure if it was just a defective batch, but I certainly don't plan on re-ordering.

Another reviewer has already commented on these glasses breaking spontaneously. I will only add that each of the sixteen was broken in eight months after extremely gentle use. Save your money.

I also purchased these glasses, and have only a few left!! They go into the dishwasher in one piece and come out in a few pieces. They look pretty enough but because the bottom is so heavy when they are in the dishwasher, due to the water pressure and the weight of the bottom they tip over onto the other glasses next to them, so if you are not able to secure them into your dishwasher so that they will not move, or anchor them with another bowl/or something so that they will not move they will break!!!!! They are awful!!!!!! What happened to the good old days when the glasses used to be durable.

We have owned and used these glasses for about a month. Already three have broken while in the dishwasher. We have never had this problem with any other glasses including our jelly glass collection. I believe the vibration/thermal stress causes the breakage- no evidence of banging against other dishes. Don't waste your money if you intend to put them in the dishwasher.

We love these glasses.....water does not accumulate on the top in the dishwasher, they are bottom weighted which helps my husband.......we are in our "golden years" and arthritis causes him to tip over drinking glasses easily.......but these are giving him a run for his money. He seldom comments on household items...but made a point of telling me he really likes the new drinking glasses......I bought two sets!
