From the Back Cover: "The church gets into trouble whenever it thinks it is in the church business rather than the Kingdom business," writes Howard Snyder. "In the church business, people are concerned with church activities, religious behavior and spiritual things. In the Kingdom business, people are concerned with Kingdom activities, all human behavior and everything God has mad.... Church people think about how to get people into the church; Kingdom people think about how to get the church into the world."

So the church needs to be liberated for Kingdom purposes. It needs to be set free to become what God intends.

Snyder proposes a bold, new ecological model for the church in relation to God's economy. He looks at the church as sacrament, community, servant and witness. Then he discusses the Kingdom in relation to ministry, theology, Scripture and lifestyle. Finally, Snyder examines "lay' ministry, the role of women, the role of pastors and concern for the poor.
