Book Description

In this provocative volume, Robert Nash argues for the validity of an exciting, alternative approach to doing scholarly writing that he calls the "scholarly personal narrative" (SPN). The result of 35 years of supervising student papers, theses, dissertations, and publications, this practical book:

• Provides an alternative to the more conventional modes of qualitative and quantitative inquiry currently used in professional training programs, particularly in education.
• Features a very accessible presentation that combines application, rationale, critique, and inspiration—and is itself an example of this kind of writing.
• Teaches students how to use personal writing in order to analyze, explicate, and advance their ideas.
• Offers tips and guidelines for writing an SPN, using examples from students who have been successful with these types of writing projects.
• Encourages minority students, women, and others to find and express their authentic voices by teaching them to use their own lives as primary resources for their scholarship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personal Writing Matters, January 17, 2005
This review is from: Liberating Scholarly Writing: The Power Of Personal Narrative (Paperback)
Robert Nash, an engaging writer, rigorous scholar, passionate, kind, committed teacher and a brilliant mind, delivers a groundbreaking book advocating a new paradigm for scholarly writing.

Nash consistently tackles difficult and controversial topics in education with intelligence, grace, balance and the keen insights of a University Professor with nearly forty years in the classroom and the academy. One of the most talented and insightful educational philosophers of our time, he presents a provocative and powerful case that personal writing really does matter.

Nash has three particular audiences for this book. Degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students particularly those from underrepresented groups, graduate students in schools of education and other professional schools who are considering writing theses and dissertations using the personal narrative methodology, and faculty, researchers, and scholars in schools of education, and in other professional schools. The book is useful to anyone who desires to write truthfully and compellingly.

Nash offers ten tentative guidelines for writing narratives, offers eight examples and presents useful and insightful thoughts about the particulars of the genre. Nash offers recommend reading lists and a thorough bibliography helpful to the narrative writer.

Nash has a knack for writing books offering prescient ideas: Faith, Hype and Clarity: Teaching About Religion In America's Schools and Colleges, Religious Pluralism in the Academy: Opening the Dialogue, Real World Ethics: Frameworks for Educators and Human Services Professionals and Answering the Virtuecrats: A Moral Conversation on Character Education. Not surprisingly he does it once more here.

Liberating Scholarly Writing: The Power of Personal Narrative in my opinion, as a personal narrative dissertator will become the seminal document for writing narrative theses, dissertations and comprehensive papers. This book will change the face of dissertation and thesis writing forever by building a compelling case for an alternative to more conventional modes of scholarly inquiry.
