Book Description

November 25, 2008
Truly life-changing, The Liberation Diet by Kevin Brown and Annette Presley shatters myths to bring a commonsense approach to eating—and living. Exposing the half-truths and outright lies taught by conventional nutritional wisdom, the program reveals why modern diets fail and shows how The Liberation Diet is the answer to America’s weight problem. With a bold and candid wit, this must-read tells it like it is with a balance of knowledge and experience to teach a clear message about diet truth and error while promoting a lifestyle of real-food nutrition coupled with simple exercise. With chapter titles such as Lipid Profiling, The Stealth Additive, Milk Matters, and The Cow and the Tiger, the co-authors brilliantly script a simple plan to lose weight and keep it off for life. With thought provoking discussions on food additives, fats, carbohydrates, calories, water, salt, and more, readers will look at how they eat, why they eat, and what they eat in a whole new way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liberate yourself from obesity, April 25, 2009
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
I agree with the principles put forth in this book not because it is my opinion but because I lost 60 pounds following a diet plan almost identical to the author's. Kevin Brown suggests eating the way humans ate through out history before the low-fat, artificial food craze began. The odd thing is that obesity and heart disease was almost unheard of until the cheap high carbohydrate food of the modern corporate world. Also the crazy 1000+ calorie restaurant meals with hundreds of carbohydrates in one setting has added to the epidemic.
The book suggests changing our eating to natural foods with a focus on proteins and natural fats. Avoid trans fats (Hydrogenated oils) that can damage the body. Your body needs protein as building blocks and essential fats for good health. Carbohydrates are not essential and should be limited to a few pieces of fruit and vegetables a day, make an effort to eat these in season and get them locally grown if possible to avoid insecticides. I learned that excessive water can actually cause your body to flush out minerals and nutrients, and we really need only a few cups of water a day not the 8 glasses recommended. MSG, splenda, and aspartame are not natural and should be avoided, the author explains why.
The diet is very practical with 2-3 meals a day based on your hunger. With the focus on quality proteins and fat as the focus and a small amount of natural carbohydrates. 50% of calories in a diet coming from fat could shock some people, but the numerous testimonials in the back of the book and my own experience should give you comfort that it works, the blood pressure readings and blood work proved it for me. Avoid all food that is processed, prepackaged, and manufactured. I like that the author talks about phasing in the changes slowly whether it is adding butter to margarine until it is all butter. Or phasing out diet colas, if you drink 6 a day, next week drink 5 a day, then 4 the next week etc. until you are down to replacing it with a more healthy natural drink. This principle is what made it possible for me to be successful in changing my eating behavior. I would eat a healthy breakfast for the first week, then add a healthy lunch the next week until I had changed my eating behavior. It works! The key is to reduce your carbohydrate intake to a normal level so your body quits releasing insulin to lower your blood sugar. The problem with this is that insulin is a fat storing hormone that causes your body to store fat and sends signals of hunger after it has lowered your blood sugar. This is not a low-carb diet, it is a normal-carb diet.
Just an excellent book that if you follow the program you will lose weight and become healthy and energetic. Open your mind to what really works and just try it, you will be shocked at the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Test, June 28, 2009
By
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
Plagued with gastrointestinal problems since the age of 27, I have tried numerous diets, medications, and alternative remedies with little success. I really didn't expect that The Liberation Diet would be any different. But, if I had this information back then, I could have spared myself years of suffering!

I was skeptical at first, especially the part about drinking raw milk. Like most people, I had been programmed to believe that real milk was somehow dangerous. I was also convinced that I had to consume huge quantities of fiber each day to stay "healthy." Over the years, I kept wondering when the bloating, cramps, and pain would disappear.

Then, I had the opportunity to meet one of the authors, Kevin Brown, and hear his amazing presentation. Some of his suggestions seemed rather strange. How could I possibly eat eggs, bacon, butter, cheese, and red meat? Wait, I love all those things, but won't they make my symptoms worse? I thought, "What have I got to lose?"

I started gradually by changing one meal at a time. For breakfast, instead of my cardboard-tasting cereal with low-fat milk, I had farm-fresh eggs, bacon, sausage, and real milk. Over the next few weeks, I replaced my high-fiber bread and fiber supplements with more real dairy and proteins. I added some Greek yogurt and kefir as a snack or for those rare times when I felt hungry.

Talk about a liberation! I noticed improvement during the first week, even though I was only making slight changes to my diet. For years, I had to plan my day around meals and proximity to bathrooms. For those who suffer with GI problems, you know what I mean! But now, I'm free. I can eat whenever I want - including only two meals a day without being hungry - and go on long trips without fear.

So, if you're thinking about joining me on The Liberation Diet, here's a simple test. Read the book and gradually change your diet to real food. Then, go back to a high-fiber diet loaded with other carbohydrates as suggested by the USDA "food pyramid" and observe what happens. That sluggish, low-energy, bloated feeling will prove which is better!

This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
I have a clean and fresh start with my health, finally. The Liberation Diet has allowed me to understand the misleading information we all have been subjected to for so many years. As a Holistic Nutritionist, I too have suffered with many ailments, the latest being Bell's Palsy. I have been eating like a tiger for a 3 week period now.My aches and pains have vanished and I have lost weight by eating real food vs fake food.Kevin Brown's enlightenment on the subject of food and it's history are astounding.By page 19, I cried for humanity and all the pain children and the aging have suffered from diseases that food has caused. Our diet really does matter! Read this book and your health will regenerate when you eat like a TIGER!
