3.0 out of 5 stars A Plausible Diet Plan
I've never really been a big dieter so, I've never really read any diet books. This one was a first for me. The Liberation Diet seems like a diet that just about anyone can do. As with any good diet it does require a lifestyle change, but with any weight loss program if you're not willing to alter your lifestyle to get results, you're probably not going to lose weight...

5.0 out of 5 stars Liberate yourself from obesity, April 25, 2009
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
I agree with the principles put forth in this book not because it is my opinion but because I lost 60 pounds following a diet plan almost identical to the author's. Kevin Brown suggests eating the way humans ate through out history before the low-fat, artificial food craze began. The odd thing is that obesity and heart disease was almost unheard of until the cheap high carbohydrate food of the modern corporate world. Also the crazy 1000+ calorie restaurant meals with hundreds of carbohydrates in one setting has added to the epidemic.
The book suggests changing our eating to natural foods with a focus on proteins and natural fats. Avoid trans fats (Hydrogenated oils) that can damage the body. Your body needs protein as building blocks and essential fats for good health. Carbohydrates are not essential and should be limited to a few pieces of fruit and vegetables a day, make an effort to eat these in season and get them locally grown if possible to avoid insecticides. I learned that excessive water can actually cause your body to flush out minerals and nutrients, and we really need only a few cups of water a day not the 8 glasses recommended. MSG, splenda, and aspartame are not natural and should be avoided, the author explains why.
The diet is very practical with 2-3 meals a day based on your hunger. With the focus on quality proteins and fat as the focus and a small amount of natural carbohydrates. 50% of calories in a diet coming from fat could shock some people, but the numerous testimonials in the back of the book and my own experience should give you comfort that it works, the blood pressure readings and blood work proved it for me. Avoid all food that is processed, prepackaged, and manufactured. I like that the author talks about phasing in the changes slowly whether it is adding butter to margarine until it is all butter. Or phasing out diet colas, if you drink 6 a day, next week drink 5 a day, then 4 the next week etc. until you are down to replacing it with a more healthy natural drink. This principle is what made it possible for me to be successful in changing my eating behavior. I would eat a healthy breakfast for the first week, then add a healthy lunch the next week until I had changed my eating behavior. It works! The key is to reduce your carbohydrate intake to a normal level so your body quits releasing insulin to lower your blood sugar. The problem with this is that insulin is a fat storing hormone that causes your body to store fat and sends signals of hunger after it has lowered your blood sugar. This is not a low-carb diet, it is a normal-carb diet.
Just an excellent book that if you follow the program you will lose weight and become healthy and energetic. Open your mind to what really works and just try it, you will be shocked at the results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Test, June 28, 2009
By
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
Plagued with gastrointestinal problems since the age of 27, I have tried numerous diets, medications, and alternative remedies with little success. I really didn't expect that The Liberation Diet would be any different. But, if I had this information back then, I could have spared myself years of suffering!

I was skeptical at first, especially the part about drinking raw milk. Like most people, I had been programmed to believe that real milk was somehow dangerous. I was also convinced that I had to consume huge quantities of fiber each day to stay "healthy." Over the years, I kept wondering when the bloating, cramps, and pain would disappear.

Then, I had the opportunity to meet one of the authors, Kevin Brown, and hear his amazing presentation. Some of his suggestions seemed rather strange. How could I possibly eat eggs, bacon, butter, cheese, and red meat? Wait, I love all those things, but won't they make my symptoms worse? I thought, "What have I got to lose?"

I started gradually by changing one meal at a time. For breakfast, instead of my cardboard-tasting cereal with low-fat milk, I had farm-fresh eggs, bacon, sausage, and real milk. Over the next few weeks, I replaced my high-fiber bread and fiber supplements with more real dairy and proteins. I added some Greek yogurt and kefir as a snack or for those rare times when I felt hungry.

Talk about a liberation! I noticed improvement during the first week, even though I was only making slight changes to my diet. For years, I had to plan my day around meals and proximity to bathrooms. For those who suffer with GI problems, you know what I mean! But now, I'm free. I can eat whenever I want - including only two meals a day without being hungry - and go on long trips without fear.

So, if you're thinking about joining me on The Liberation Diet, here's a simple test. Read the book and gradually change your diet to real food. Then, go back to a high-fiber diet loaded with other carbohydrates as suggested by the USDA "food pyramid" and observe what happens. That sluggish, low-energy, bloated feeling will prove which is better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Separating fact from fantasy..., December 8, 2009
By
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
I recently had the pleasure of reading The Liberation Diet - it is an excellent book, written in a refreshing style, but beware, it's not for the feint of heart! Read this book only if you are seeking the truth about what kind of diet is best for you, especially in this era of processed, manufactured, and not-real food.

Many years ago I adopted the Atkins diet. Prior to adopting that regimen, I was putting on weight and found that eating pasta-based dishes simply were not satisfying my hunger. Within a matter of months (coupled with an exercise routine), I lost 35 pounds and felt totally nourished and fulfilled. And despite the success of that original program (and my own adaptation of that diet that worked for me), I never really knew why it worked, or why it was OK to eat this way - until I read The Liberation Diet.

I must confess that even though I had adopted a diet that conformed in large part to the one that is recommended, and well documented, in this book, I wondered about the impact all that "fat" was having in my diet, not to mention my arteries. My cholesterol levels remained normal, but the concern was always there. One of the great strengths of this book is learning the truth about the "science" behind the U.S. dietary policy.

In many respects, it is based on flawed research, given that the original conclusions by Ancel Keys at the USDA were based on the diets of seven countries that conformed to his thesis that "fat caused cardiac disease" and completely ignored the diets of 15 other countries that completely disproved his thesis. This book then goes on to explain the impact this mis-interpretation of the data had and it's subsequent influence on dietary rules and regulations. It is a bit humbling to learn that our phobia about fat is based on totally flawed research. The changes in our diet for just this one factor, alone, have had an enormous negative impact on the health and welfare of American citizens.

This is but one brief chapter in a book that sheds refreshing candor about all aspects of diet, including, the role of carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, food additives, the role of exercise, and so on. It presents compelling facts and information that will, at first, confound you and then upon reflection, you will realize the profound distortions that have occurred in our diet in the last 100 years. It is vital that we have this broader historical perspective and The Liberation Diet is an excellent source for a straightforward and informative approach to improving your diet and providing a foundation for a better and more fulfilling life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for you health!, May 13, 2010
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
My wife and I went to a meeting where Kevin Brown presented his ideas and diet. After hearing the information he presented, I purchased this book. I had concern about my health as my weight kept climbing and climbing due to my regular modern diet. Boy was this book a wake up call! I began the diet two months ago after finishing the book and am already down 30 lbs. I no longer feel tired in the afternoons after consuming high carb diets. Everything he states makes complete sense. I told my brother-in-law about this and a month later, he's already down 21 lbs! We both with I had met Kevin sooner. This book is a must read for anyone that has been struggling with both their weight and their health. What you have been told is the truth about 'the food pyramid' couldn't be farther from the truth about what you should eat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Break Free From The Bondage Of The High-Carb, Low-Fat Lie!, July 24, 2010
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
People these days feel trapped by the obvious failure of conventional wisdom when it comes to their diet and health. They have faithfully followed everything they've been told is good for them down to the last bit of whole grain bread and tofu burgers that are most commonly associated with the standard low-fat, high-carb, plant-based dietary recommendations-but they still inexplicably deal with obesity and chronic disease like never before! What the heck is going on here? It's one thing to fool around with your personal fitness and nutrition where you are expected to gain weight and have unhealthy blood sugars, lipids and the like. But what can explain these things happening when you're supposedly doing everything 100% right? That's the answer that personal trainer Kevin Brown and registered dietitian Annette Presley answer for readers in their counterintuitive book called The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation!.

Brown and Presley do an outstanding job of explaining the breakdown that is happening with nutrition in the 21st Century. They correctly identify what's wrong with a "one-size-fits-all" approach to promoting the same diet to everyone without taking into account the specific individualized factors that make one way of eating better than another for certain people. Challenging this conventional wisdom on nutrition is what you get early and often from The Liberation Diet and the authors don't hold back in blasting away at the nonsense that pervades from the so-called health "experts" and government policymakers responsible for perpetrating these lies on the unsuspecting public. The stories behind how foods like Crisco came into being are truly fascinating and should make you shudder about what the food industry is feeding Americans that we DON'T yet know about. We learn that clever marketing and a little slight of hand is all it takes to convince people to start eating something their great-grandparents would have never even entertained a thought about eating. From margarine to Cool Whip to Wonder Bread, we're surrounded by so many "fake foods" that the message this book implores on the reader is to simply get back to eating real, whole foods again. Duh!

As you turn page after page of The Liberation Diet, you'll no doubt find yourself becoming angrier and angrier by all the preponderance of the evidence presented that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that we have been lied to about what constitutes a healthy diet. And even more egregious is the story you'll read about entrepreneurs Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller who were the ones who set up the accreditation process for medical schools. Because they saw the potential for billions of dollars in profits from pharmaceutical sales, the only schools that would be accredited were ones that taught students about how to prescribe expensive drugs to their patients rather than having them learn about the equally effective nutritional therapies. Unfortunately, this model for teaching medical school students still exists today while millions of people in the United States are needlessly suffering from mostly preventable diseases related their diet. You may need to start breathing deeply or take a walk in between chapters to get your blood pressure down again because this information will have you up in arms!

Brown and Presley also point readers back to the infamous "Seven Countries" study by Ancel Keys that has become the standard bearer for the low-fat diet quagmire that is surprisingly still in existence today despite the fact there have never been any scientific studies published proving it is effective for weight loss or improving health. In fact, there is ample evidence that the diet has been a dismal failure for people with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases of modern man. But rather than admitting they've been wrong all these years, the purveyors of the high-carb, low-fat diet keep touting it as the gospel truth while tens of millions more are getting sick and dying from the biggest health scam in the history of the world. And the politicians on Capitol Hill are partially to blame for this as well.

Senator George McGovern and his committee on nutrition in the mid-1970s were the ones who created all the mass hysteria and fear-mongering about saturated fat when they promoted the now-infamous "Dietary Goals for Americans" that was later picked up by the United States Department of Agriculture to help them promote the sale of more key crops like grains, corn and bean (which just so happen to be very high in carbohydrate). The authors write in their book, "They liked the idea of a low fat diet because if people cut the fat from their diets, they would have to add carbohydrates." Again, this is still the overriding theme of the USDA's Dietary Guidelines released every five years in the United States with seemingly no dramatic changes each time new recommendations are released. This is why The Liberation Diet book was written and so sorely needed in modern-day society. It's time for public revolt against the status quo!

So if everything is so grim and bleak, do we have any hope at all? You bet we do! It's called THE TRUTH and you get a lot of it within the pages of this book. Learn why saturated fat and cholesterol are not the reasons why we have heart disease, how eating butter, lard, and coconut oil are actually good for you, why high cholesterol foods like eggs are healthy, why consuming real whole (raw) milk is optimal for your health, and why the highly-processed hydrogenated fats (trans fats) and vegetable oils are the real villains in our diet along with sugar and excessive consumption of carbohydrate. And there are some real doozy stories you'll read about how common carbohydrate foods consumed by most Americans like cereal actually came into existence. You'll never believe it until you read about it. This book is peppered with ample evidence that should convince you that eating carbs will make you fat, diseased, and eventually dead from some preventable chronic health problems that nobody is talking about. You'll learn that there is absolutely zero science supporting a high-carb diet and that livin' la vida low-carb is NOT the fad diet it has been made out to be by the anti-low-carb members of the health media.

Other topics of interest covered in this book include calories in, calories out, salt, water, exercise, supplements, and more! Real-life examples of how people have changed their lives by implementing the strategies of The Liberation Diet are also included to encourage you as you take this newfound journey for yourself. Of course, you also get lots of recipes, references and other resources to help you along as you improve your lifestyle for good. Having interviewed both Kevin Brown and Annette Presley for my health-based podcast, I can personally attest that they are the real deal when it comes to articulating information that will help you in your personal weight and health goals. If you've been frustrated and felt trapped by the low-fat lie that's been heavily promoted for far too long, then why not give the concepts outlined in this book a try for yourself? It could be the answer you've been looking for all along.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eat fat, and lose fat! Sounds counter-intuitive but isn't., July 27, 2009
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
If you are overweight, ask yourself if all the diets and excercise programs you have tried have worked. The answer, for most people is "No!" Well, it's not because you didn't try; it's because the diet information you were given was incorrect. It's not your fault that it didn't work. Not only is that diet information incorrect, it's actually dangerous. The Liberation Diet is a diet you can live on for the rest of your life, and you'll want to after you read this book.

I bought Kevin's book after seeing his presentation, but I didn't buy it because I wanted to lose weight. I bought it because I was looking for ways to avoid getting cancer, diabetes, or heart disease, since those are now so prevalent in my famly. Every day I hear of someone else who has been diagnosed with cancer, or has died of it. There has to be some environmental reason for all these diseases increasing exponentially. I also wanted to stop my carb craving cycles, which I knew were going to lead to "adult onset" diabetes. My weight was OK, but my energy wasn't.

I learned so much from his book, and I'm now finding many other books that confirm his statements. If you like The Liberation Diet, I would recommend getting a copy of Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon as a companion book. You'll want a cookbook that is in line with Kevin's diet principles, and this one will teach you about nutrition while it's teaching you to cook real food that much healthier and nutritious.

The Liberation Diet explains the seeming paradox of eating fat to lose fat. The kind of fat you eat makes all the difference, and after you read this book, you'll never touch margarine, Crisco, canola oil (there's no such thing as a canola plant), or any food with partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (which is probably 50-80% of what is in your pantry right now). Now I see potato chips as cancer in a bag. It's funny how that takes away my desire for them. Bread, on the other hand, is much harder for me to give up, so I eat sprouted grain bread with butter when I let myself have it.

Drinking real milk (not pasteurized) is actually much safer and healthier than drinking pasteurized milk, but I'll let you read his book to see why. I can tell you that my husband, who was always lactose intolerant when he drank pasteurized milk, was able to drink real milk with no problem. Now that the enzymes are in his body from the real milk, he can even drink a little pasteurized milk without digestive upset, except that pasteurized milk isn't good for anyone.

Whether the government is in a conspiracy with food production or not, is not the point, although it explains a lot to those of us who believe that following the money will lead you to the corruption. The point is that there is scientific reasoning and lots of traditional health behind the Liberation Diet. My recommendation is to get your blood tested before the diet and then again after about 6 months on the diet and see for yourself. My husband's cholesterol dropped 20 points in 1 month, his weight dropped 12 lb., and his blood pressure came down too. I have another relative whose IBS was dramatically improved in 1 week on the diet, and her knee pain went away. She lost 7 lb. the first week.

I highly recommend this book and the principles it supports for everyone, no matter how healthy or slim you are. I wish there were a way to convince everyone, including doctors and nutritionists, that this is how we should be eating. The book is a good start, but "we the people" are very well indoctrinated with misinformation. If you like this book, please spread the word. I truly believe you could save a life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overall its a good book...., April 17, 2009
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
Chapter 1 which deals with fake food and processed foods that are void of real nutrients is interesting.

He also has a chapter 11 on Weston Price whom I am familiar with because of a local organic group. Chapter 13 dealing with milk is a good one. We only drink local organic raw milk.

Chapter 8 which deals with water is one area I tend to disagree with simply because I am so sick of seeing kids and adults guzzling Pepsi, Coke, Mountain Dew be it sugared or diet types, and want to see people reach for water rather than sodas.

Overall its a good book and has some valuable information. I am into healthy home grown organic foods, physical exercise/activities, and an overall lifestyle that is geared to health and fitness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Makes Sense, April 30, 2009
By
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
This is the scared straight of diet books. Who knew that chemicals and additives lurk in foods that are touted as healthy? I had read many of the facts in other diet books, but this one gives the history behind the horrible things manufacturers put into the food we eat. After reading this, I am trying to cut back on the chemicals and reading labels more carefully now. So far I have lost a pound and I am not starving either! The best part? Butter! I am eating more unprocessed foods and feel better than I have in a long time. I still haven't located the raw milk yet as recommended, but now that I know what fat free milk really is, YUCK.

This book provides more of a life plan than just a diet. I did lose around 40 lbs on Weight Watchers, but I was starving constantly and felt crappy. I tried the Schwartzbein Principle, but I couldn't get past all the rules. It is easier to cut out the fake foods and eat real things instead. Stay tuned...I have four pounds I want to lose still and at least this plan lets you feel better while doing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personal Trainer's endorse diet!!, January 15, 2009
This review is from: The Liberation Diet: Setting America Free from the Bondage of Health Misinformation! (Paperback)
I am a Personal Trainer and I have utilized this diet with my clients. The results have been rapid and extremely effective. If you stick with the diet itself irregardless of exercise, it will still make you lose weight. I am so glad the authors of this book have made this available to the general public and I am looking forward to another book with more recipes in it.
