excellent 39 book collection..., June 27, 2011
This review is from: Liberation (World War II) (Hardcover)
I originally owned about 22 of these volumes in the late 1980s(these were originally released from like 1978 through 1984 or so). Over time and through several moves I lost some of them and often missed rereading them which I still did with the remaing 11 that I had. So recently I decided to look these up on amazon and see if anyone had them available. Lo and behold, they are available through amazon for basically the price of shipping. The fancy ones with the dust jackets and silver lettering are just reprints of the originals (so called collectors edition), so if you are going to collect these you need to decide which ones you want the orginal run or the newer collectors edition run. One thing to take notice of is that in the original run the volume titled "The Second Front" was renamed "The D-Day Invasion" for the second run. Probably for clarification purposes as some folks probably would not understand what a second front referred to but everyone knows about D-day. I didn't know this and I ordered both and they are basically the same exact book with different covers and titles. Be careful ordering the books as a complete set since it is a lot cheaper to find them separately and make your own set. Also other posters have written that when they ordered so-called complete sets they often got multiple copies of the same book instead of getting all 39 volumes.
As for the books themselves, they were basically a really ambitious attempt to hit everyhing about world war two from the forgotten aleutian campaign to more well know battles like the ardenne offensive. The series does not stop at the battles themselves but also delves into the politics that created the conditions for war. I think it is a great photographic resource first and foremost and gives a decent introduction to all the different aspects of the war.
