About the Author

Gabriel I.H. Williams served as a journalist for over ten years in Liberia before fleeing the country in late 1993 due to death threats from some of the armed factions involved in the country's civil war. Williams was editor of Liberia's leading independent daily, the Inquirer Newspaper. He served for six years on the executive committee of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), the national journalists organization, as assistant secretary general, secretary general and acting president, respectively. The PUL was in the forefront in advocating for human rights and democracy in the country.

Williams is widely traveled, and has visited several countries in Africa, Asia and Europe, including the then Soviet Union, on journalism related activities. He served as a journalism scholar at the United Nations Headquarter in New York City under the Daj Hammarskjold Memorial Scholarship Fund of the UN Correspondents Association, and has attended press functions at the White House, State Department, Pentagon, and National Press Club in Washington, D.C. He has also benefitted from media educational programs at the European Community Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, the U.S. Information Agency and the Canadian government, respectively. He has also represented Liberia at several international conferences, including the 4th World Conference on Democracy in Washington, D.C., attended by representatives from nearly eighty countries in 1993, at which the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama and U.S. president Bill Clinton were keynote speakers at the opening and closing events, respectively.
