5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding current events required, December 7, 2002

This review is from: USS Liberty Dead in the water (DVD)
The documentary is well planned and presented in a straight forward and realistic manner. It is a required view because of current events. It is past time the American public holds politicians accountable.Liberty is bought and paid for with blood. The blood shed by the crew of the USS Liberty was too much for political reasons and is a shame on our countries honor. It is past time to learn the why of the attack and the reason for the continued cover up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the bunch!, February 18, 2003
By A Customer
The 1967 attack by Israel on the USS Liberty has been told by Sligo Productions in 1987, by the History Channel in 2001, by the Liberty Vets Assn. in 2002, but the BBC has dug deeper than anyone before in "Dead in the Water." We've learned that US photo recon planes helped Israel in the Six-Day-War with the Star of David painted over the US markings. We've learned that nuclear armed planes were sent to nuke Cairo when it was felt that Egypt had attacked the ship, recalled later when we learned it was Israel. We've learned that other highly classified programs were involved with the attack. And the ugliest of all, that the US government turned their backs on the sailors and covered up the incident, telling the sailors that if they talked about it, they'd get court-martialed or worse! Jim Ennes's book "Assault on the Liberty" unzipped the mum lips of the survivors, but alas, the US congress has refused to listen to them and investigate the incident as they have all other incidents of its kind. Torpedo boats shot up life rafts as the ship prepared to abandon ship, American sailors on deck shot at from 50 feet away. This video lays it out... including McNamara saying he "doesn't remember." It is top notch and any serious student of history should see this one. It is a winner!

4.0 out of 5 stars A chilling expose of the Israelis attack on the USS Liberty, December 5, 2004
By
This review is from: USS Liberty Dead in the water (DVD)
I just finished watching this film and was curious what others had to say about it so I checked here. After reading what some of the apolgists for Israel had to say about this incident I felt compelled to respond.

"Dead in the Water" is only the latest but probably the best in a line of documentaries on the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967.

The documentary includes some never before seen or heard evidence.

For example, newly released audio intercepts of radio communication of Israeli pilots and their superiors discussing the impending attack on the Liberty were made in real time by the National Security Agency (NSA). These intercepts show that the Israeli pilots knew that they were about to attack an American naval vessel. To his credit, whoever he is, one of the Israeli pilots was surprised to see that he was being directed to attack an American ship. When he pointed out to his superiors that the Liberty was American he was told to continue on a flight path for attack. Incredulous, he repeated to his superiors that the ship was American and again they just told him to follow orders not question them and attack the Liberty which, of course, he did along with other Israeli air and naval forces.

One of the things that the documentary discusses is that Israel sought to sink the Liberty with all hands going down in order that Washington would assume that Egypt was at fault and then America would go to war against Egypt.

The documentary also discusses the fact that when the American aircraft carriers USS American and Saratoga of the Sixth Fleet positioned in the Mediterranean Sea sent F-4 fighter aircraft aloft to come to defend the Liberty, Secretary of Defense McNamara ordered the planes back TWICE. When the local commander on the scene asked for confirmation of the recall orders he was patched thru to McNamara who insisted that the F-4's be brought back. When the commander asked for confirmation of that order President Johnson came on the phone immediately and confirmed the order to recall the planes. Obviously, President Johnson did not want to face the embarrassing situation of American and Israeli aircraft fighting in the skies of the Eastern Meditteranean.

But there is so much more in this documentary that it has to be seen especially the recent interviews with Secretary McNamara who refuses to answer questions about the incident as well as then CIA Director Richard Helms who also cut off his interview on the matter.

Just as an aside, the other reviewer who claimed that "Capt. McGonagle of the USS Liberty even admitted the attack was accidental" doesn't know what he is talking about and obviously hasn't seen "Dead in the Water." After the attack Captain McGonagle continued his navy career with orders not to talk about the Israeli attack and the events that followed. But two years before he died, McGonagle broke his silence and stated unequivocally that in his opinion the attack was deliberate which the overwhelming body of evidence indicates.

Unfortunately, "Dead in the Water" was released in 2002 before the latest staggering development. The Navy's own lead investigator of the official Navy Commission on the attack on USS Liberty, Ward Boston, revealed at a public news conference conducted in Washington in 2003 that he was ordered by his superiors to issue a report indicating that the attack was accidental, all facts to the contrary be damned.

The head of the Commission, Admiral Kidd, issued the order to him Boston. In turn, Kidd was ordered by his superiors right up the chain of command to Secretary McNamara and President Johnson to cover up the truth of the unprovoked attack on the USS Liberty.

That the American public has been kept in the dark for so many years about the attack on the Liberty speaks volumes. Fortunately, this documentary helps to shed some much needed light on it. Unfortunately, it was only shown on British tv not American. Fortunately, a copy of it is now available from Amazon and every concerned American citizen should see it.
