Yes, you DO need to dig a hole in the ground and securely set this thing in place -- after all, it's going be holding 20, 30, or 40 pounds or more of hose and you need it to be stable.
Other models I've owned have featured a horizontal input connection, which has put a strain in the supply hose (the one coming from your spigot or other water source. Typically, these hose stands are backed up against a wall, and you end up having to permanently bend your supply hose to accommodate the horizontal input and squeeze it in place. This eventually leads to failure, and puts undue sideways pressure on the input in the back of the stand.
THIS model has a 90-degree input connection, and points DOWNWARD -- utterly brilliant! Your supply hose lays on the ground, and easily and naturally turns upwards to connect to the back of the hose stand. No awkwardly-bent connections, no strain, etc. What a great idea!
This product appears to be all steel and brass, and gives the impression that it'll last a long, long time.
Worth every penny of the asking price, I recommend this stand without reservation!
Update: original review was march 2012, this update is august 2013. This is still working great, haven't had to replace anything. Did turn the original faucet off during the winter months to kerp freezing temps from breaking the connecting hose.
The square tube that goes into the ground is fairly long, but not long enough to provide a sturdy anchor in the sandy soil here in South FL. I considered pouring a concrete footing, but decided that was too much trouble, especially since I may want to move it later. I discovered that the inside dimensions of the square tube are a good fit for a 1" pipe, so I cut a length of 1" schedule 40 PVC pipe and drove it into the ground in the spot where I wanted the hose stand. I decided the height that I wanted the faucet to be and cut the pipe off just below this. Then I placed the square tube of the stand over the pipe and drove it into the ground until the faucet was the right height. If you do this, you'll want to place a wood block over the end of the tube so that the hammer doesn't damage it. The pipe did its job, and the stand well anchored. I suppose that a galvanized steel pipe would be even better, but PVC does the trick.
Only problem I had was water inlet is 3/4 female standard hose thread, non swivel if you run a standard hose to this you are connecting the non-swivel male end of the hose to a non-swivel female fitting of the stand which means you have to rotate the entire hose or the stand must rotate which is not going to happen if it is already installed in the ground. I put some fittings together that worked but would be nice if swivel hose connector was supplied.

Works perfectly. Quality materials. Could only be improved by finishing the in-ground portion of the stake in an arrowhead shape to make pounding it into the ground easier.Published 6 days ago by Amazon Customer
