Yet another underrated Hunter CD,
By Aaron Gangross (Here and There) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Liberty (Audio CD)
Robert Hunter, the Grateful Dead's main lyricist, recorded several underrated solo albums between 1974 and 1990. This 1987 CD is--so far--the final sudio album he recorded. Overall, it is much more optimistic and fun than his previous efforts. It contains an early version of the Dead's "Liberty" with music by Hunter (rather than Jerry Garcia). Garcia plays guitar throughout the CD, including, I believe, pedal steel on "When a Man Loves a Woman" (not the more famous song by the same name). "Worried Song" is Hunter's updated version of the folk standard and is among my favorite Hunter recordings. This CD was all but ignored upon its release, as with most of his albums. I hope Hunter will record more. Perhaps someday he will get the recognition he deserves.
