Author Scotti Cohn tells the stories of eleven children involved in or personally changed by America's war for independence. From boys--and even one young woman--who entered into battles themselves, to others whose families' involvement (or efforts not to be involved) changed their lives forever, these children's stories show the Revolutionary War as never before.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Sometimes a war's greatest heroes are its survivors, those who manage to forge new lives despite the tragedy they have experienced. History books usually do not describe how a nine-year-old Massachusetts boy might have felt when his friend was killed in the Boston Massacre or what went through the mind of a teenage Quaker girl when her family fled Philadelphia. Children like these found themselves on the edge of the fray-both in combat and in the throes of daily life-helping, or simply enduring, as best their interrupted youths allowed. Their behind-the-scenes stories illustrate what it was really like for children during the Revolutionary War.

Meet Frances Slocum, a five-year-old girl captured and raised by Native Americans; James Fortune, a free African American who at the age of fifteen enlisted on a government-commissioned ship; and Deborah Samson, who, at twenty, dressed in men's clothes and joined the Continental army.

Learn the inspiring stories of American children who displayed courage, devotion, and wisdom during the colonies' fight for freedom.

More About the Author

I have been writing poetry and fiction almost since I learned the alphabet.

My first major opus was a joint project with my best friend in 4th grade. We wrote a sequel to 101 Dalmatians and sent it to Walt Disney Studios. They accepted it and we became famous child prodigies, and. . . oops. There I go, writing fiction again.

Anyhow, although I was bitter at the rejection by Disney, I continued to pursue my calling (and I do consider it a calling -- something I simply cannot not do).

I have written eight nonfiction books for The Globe Pequot Press.

My first picture book -- One Wolf Howls -- was published by Sylvan Dell in 2009. Sylvan Dell published my second picture book -- Big Cat, Little Kitty -- in spring 2011. A third book in the "series" -- On the Move -- will be published in 2012.

In order to actually earn a living, I have worked as a technical editor, legal secretary, public relations specialist, and copyeditor (primarily for nursing textbooks).

I have two adult children, five grand-cats, and one grand-dog -- as well as my own five cats and wonderful husband (saved the best for last).

Eventually I hope to be famous and beloved by all. I think it's wise to have modest goals in life.

3.0 out of 5 stars It just didn't work for me. A history teacher's review, August 23, 2008
This review is from: Liberty's Children: Stories of Eleven Revolutionary War Children (Paperback)
'Liberty's Children' is a collection of stories about the experiences of eleven children during the Revolutionary War (although one is 20 years old, which was definitely not a child in a time when many were married with children at age 16).

The book is well-researched and accurate. I have no complaints with that or the ample bibliography that is sorted by the individual children. But, I just felt like I had to slog through parts of it and I love to read history.

I questioned some of the choices as well. Five of the eleven went off to sea, one of them was 20 years old and one was just a baby. I found myself wondering about the decision not to include the most famous child that served in the Revolutionary War, Andrew Jackson. He served as a courier and had his face slashed by a British soldier for refusing to clean his boots. Or, how about John Quincy Adams, who accompanied his father to Europe during the war to secure supplies and allies and eventually traveled all of the way to Russia. At least Sybil Luddington, the 16 year-old female "Paul Revere" for Connecticut who is featured on Connecticut's quarter coin could have been included rather than another story about a boy gone off to sea.

Not that all of the stories were a chore to read, mind you. I enjoyed the stories of Frances Slocum, James Forten and Sally Wister in particular. If you have read this book and want to know more about Frances Slocum I enthusiastically recommend the novel The Red Heart by James Alexander Thom.
