Book Description

May 9, 2006 11 and up6 and up
Everyone who has a library card (and those who don’t will want one after reading this book) will love this fascinating account of how libraries have evolved. From camels delivering books in Kenya to information compression today, this is a book that’s long overdue!

Award-winning librarian Maureen Sawa takes readers on a breathless ride from the origins of libraries to the first bookshelves, from pack-horse librarians in Kentucky to the revolution that was vertical shelving. She presents familiar library heroes like Gutenberg and Benjamin Franklin and the more obscure ones, such as Hypatia, the great female librarian of Alexandria killed by a mob for opposing the teachings of Plato, and Vizier Abdul Kasem Ismail, the Persian bibliophile who traveled with forty camels carrying 117,000 books in alphabetical order.

Libraries, past, present, and future, have a history as fascinating as the books they house. A must-have for every reader!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5–What separates this volume from others on the topic is its focus on the global impact of libraries, from the digital collections of the British Library to a mobile library carried by camels in northern Kenya, and its emphasis on the intertwined early histories of book printing and libraries. The simple, linear organization and Sawa's crisp, detailed prose style will quickly draw young readers in with interesting facts and stories. Slavin's illustrations are complementary to the text and have a sophisticated, graphic-novel sensibility. Through this lively and thorough volume, students are sure to appreciate the role that libraries have played in history.–Michael Santangelo, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

1.0 out of 5 stars The Library Book, doesn't quite make it home, August 1, 2008
This review is from: The Library Book: The Story of Libraries from Camels to Computers (Hardcover)
With nearly 50 nieces and nephews I am always on the look out for a great childrens or youth book. The Library Book started out as a great read, but very quicky disappointed. The author frequently sites tall tales from history only to briefly note that most historians no longer believe such tales are true. Written post 9-11, the book has no sensitivity to Muslim images in Western press. The author notes that libraries are her passion but she is definately no fan of Roman Catholics who take minor hits in several sections. She is also not too passionate about accurate history. The illistrator does a good job with the notable exception of placing two boys dressed in Colonial American attire at the excavation site of a library from ancient Italy. The author does give many good references which readers may want to consider in lieu of this one

5.0 out of 5 stars Leisure readers will find it a wonderful, fun pick, July 29, 2006
This review is from: The Library Book: The Story of Libraries from Camels to Computers (Hardcover)
Bill Slavin provides a set of realistic, fun drawing to accent THE LIBRARY BOOK: THE STORY OF LIBRARIES FROM CAMELS TO COMPUTERS. Kids ages 11 and older receive a tour of the origins of libraries from the first book shelves to pack-horse librarians in Kentucky to the vertical shelving style which fostered libraries. Ancient history to modern times is presented in a series of glimpses into the ideas, major holdings and revolutionary changes that led to today's modern libraries. Leisure readers will find it a wonderful, fun pick.
