Book Description

0810836963 978-0810836969 December 22, 1999 21st edition
This book covers the skills necessary for a classifier using the Library of Congress Classification scheme (LCC), whether at a professional or a paraprofessional level. It is equally suitable for use by library students in colleges or universities, and others who are studying classification by themselves, either with a specific goal or as part of their continuing professional development.

This workbook will also be useful as a cataloger's reference tool. The chapters build off one another, and will be most useful when worked through in sequence. Throughout the book there are exercises to practice and test your skills. There are answers for self-checking at the back of the book.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The current trend in cataloging courses is to emphasize theory with little or no practical experience given. However, it is important for professionals, paraprofessionals, and library students to at least have a working knowledge of cataloging basics. Both of these books cover the basic skills necessary to classify in either the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) or the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The chapters and exercises are clearly written and to the point, with the answers also included. Both workbooks should be used in sequence as each chapter builds on the lessons of the previous ones. Not every LCC schedule is used. Examples and exercises were chosen to reinforce the general principles that apply across all schedules. Recommended for professionals and paraprofessionals seeking professional development, students wanting to supplement their courses with practical applications, and library schools offering distance learning courses in cataloging.--Susan Ketcham, Long Island Univ.

Review

It is highly recommended for use as a workbook or teaching tool for library school students and for catalog librarians using the Library of Congress classification system. (Arba )

...a useful asset to any modern library...The book is described as the first in a series called Library Basics and if the standard is maintained I look forward to reading future issues. (Journal Of Documentation )

...a good reference for those who need to learn or refresh their knowledge of the Library of Congress Classification and would be a good textbook for classes teaching this scheme. (Lcats )

Very useful for the teacher or students of cataloging classes. The books are also helpful for those working in the library field as professionals and support staffers. (Cataloging and Classification Quarterly )

Both professionals and paraprofessionals can brush up on their classification skills with Learn Library of Congress Classification... (American Libraries )

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent working tool, September 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Learn Library of Congress Classification (Paperback)
This book is an excellent tool for library students or new staff in a library that uses LCC.

It systematically goes through the different facets of classification in LC, covering the features, structure, building a call no., using different types of tables, how to shelve it, and has a short section on the "Classification Plus" program. Each section has many practice exercises (answers in the back of the book) to cover all possible things that you might come accross in the real world.

The authors are well qualified to produce this workbook - Helena Dittmann was the head of the University of Canberra cataloguing department for many years, and Jane Hardy also has much experience with LCC. Both authors have a background in training.

I would highly recommend this book a a text for library courses and as a working tool.
