Col. Paschall, USA (Ret.) has proven that his work in LIC 2010: Special Operations & Unconventional Warfare in the Next Century should be taken very seriously. Released in 1990, one half of the time frame has expired for the forecasts made in LIC 2010. Paschall has been pretty damn accurate.

* "Although there is an ongoing reduction in the incidence of major mid-intensity conflicts, there is an undeniable rise in the incidence of low-intensity conflicts, most of them armed insurgencies." P. 123
* ..."peacemaking is fundamentally a police-style function, not amenable to much improvement by advanced technology. The key to success is invariably the sudden appearance of overwhelming force." P. 134
* "The U.S. armed forces in particular are constrained in the field of counterinsurgency assistance ...There are two central causes of the generally poor Western military record in the field of counterinsurgency. The first is that Western armies are either not large enough or do not consider it important enough to maintain a full-time, well-qualified cadre for counterinsurgency tasks ...The second cause for lackluster Western military performance is that Western peoples will not long tolerate the use of their soldiers in suppressing rebellions in a distant land, whether their soldiers are in a direct combat role or serving as advisors ...The solution for these problems may lie in taking the military aspects of counterinsurgency campaigns out of the hands of Western military forces ...An international corporation composed of former Western officers and soldiers skilled in acceptable counterinsurgency techniques would largely solve both of these Western counterinsurgency problems." This is a serious exposé of what will be the vast majority of armed conflict in our life time, if not the remaining time for this planet. This is `must' reading for all those interested in Low Intensity Conflict & Law Enforcement.
