This product (Hedlin in the UK) is a 4% dimethicone (dimeticone) solution. There is considerable misinformation on such products because they work in a novel manner. I have heard that this stuff is supposed to be awesome and really drown the lice, but it is so liquid it drips and drips. Haven't figured out how to prevent that. Did not kill all lice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works, but is misunderstood, November 18, 2010
This review is from: LiceMD Lice & Egg Treatment, 4-Ounce Bottle (Health and Beauty)
This product (Hedlin in the UK) is a 4% dimethicone (dimeticone) solution. There is considerable misinformation on such products because they work in a novel manner. Lice can hold their breath and hang tightly to hairs when immersed in water or shampoo (called their "immersion reaction"). As soon as the water is removed, the lice become active again. LiceMD and Hedlin coat the lice with silicone and kill them not by suffocation or dehydration but by causing continuing physiological stress. You can find a scientific article about this in BMC Pharmacology by searching for: "The mode of action of dimeticone 4% lotion against head lice, Pediculus capitis." [...]

So, NO, LiceMD contains no pesticides. Anyway, lice have become resistant to the usual permethrin/pyrethrum neurotoxic agents in over-the-counter lice shampoos (Nix, Rid, or A-200), and strong malathion shampoo is an Rx.

And YES, LiceMD does indeed kill head lice. It also makes it easier to comb out live or dead lice and nits. Nits can also be removed with vinegar and a nit comb. Some schools have a zero nit policy.

But NO, LiceMD does not kill lice eggs, only hatched lice, so it must be repeated according to instructions.

BTW, head lice can only live a couple of days without feeding, so the best way to rid your house might be to take a vacation. Lice eggs are laid only on hair shafts and can only develop in warmth close to the scalp; they will die in about a week otherwise. Human head lice can't live on pets or anywhere but your scalp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Stuff On The Market!, July 25, 2011
This review is from: LiceMD Lice & Egg Treatment, 4-Ounce Bottle (Health and Beauty)
We tried everything on my daughter including prescription products and RID. My wife and I thought we got rid of all the lice in my daughter's hair but she kept complaining about itching. Four days later, as an afterthought I picked up a bottle of Lice MD at my local Walgreens after reading the reviews here (I was skeptical because it didn't have any real medication listed in the active ingredients aside from Dimethicone) but truth be told, this product worked the best. Within minutes of using it on my daughter, we must have combed out close to 30 lice. The night before, we'd searched through her hair and declared her lice free. This stuff smothers the lice and basically suffocates them. None of the 30 lice we pulled out were alive either. Anyway, I would highly recommend this product. Also, go out and get yourself a good LED magnifying glass while you're at the pharmacy because this was essential in locating the lice and nits.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, June 8, 2010

I just wanted to put my review up bc this product literally saved my daughters hair. We had already cut it short, and I was about to chop it off completely but tried this product first. My daughter came home with a HORRIBLE case of lice from school and we had already done the pesticide treatment. This product makes it sooooooooo easy to comb out the nits and bugs. Combing out the nits is the key to making sure the lice do not return as the pesticide treatments do not kill the nits. It does make the bathtub/floor super slippery, but just some soap and water will wipe it up. Found it at our local walmart. HIGHLY RECOMMEND !

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd have known of it to begin with!, July 10, 2011

This review is from: LiceMD Lice & Egg Treatment, 4-Ounce Bottle (Health and Beauty)
My 4 year old granddaughter brought head lice home, and we traced from a visitor of the kids she usually plays with. I caught them from her. Nobody else in the household got them, they had in common very short hair, or dyed hair. A solid year had come and gone struggling with all the name brand and store brand shampoos, kits, instructions, remedies. Time again to get busy for another battle, when my ruined burnt hair and her recently short cut curls and another couple of itching scalps also emit that peculiar odor when the lice are 'in bloom.'

As my granddaughter and I continued to farm lice, I also continued to read to learn and try to remedy. A fallen louse will die within 48 hours without a host, young lice which escape from the egg must feed within 24 hours or they will die, coconut oil seemed to be a pretty cool but only a messy and temporary fix... I stumbled upon LICE MD with some promises and again I stuffed my skepticism. LICE MD has a big handling comb that had finer spaces between the teeth. It was messy, yes, the gel drippy (use towels!) but it works! I raked out the drowned lice and the nits! It seemed the comb was the actual fixer. it lifting the offending material out of the hair. I kept thinking now I know why Bill Bailey needed only a fine toothed comb when he was kicked out that rainy evening, back in the day maybe a fine toothed comb was standard barest minimum, be lice free at the least... Then as I continued to research remedies I came across NitFree Terminator having been introduced to the wonders of a fine toothed comb! I bought two, LICE MD, and NitFree Terminators, one for each of us. I'd already ordered and had two RID's coming, oh well. Ummm... all this to say, we haven't had another "bloom" since the first try with LICE MD then NitFree Terminators. We do the occasional comb test to make sure we don't have nits!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!, November 11, 2011
This review is from: LiceMD Lice & Egg Treatment, 4-Ounce Bottle (Health and Beauty)
My daughter has had lice 3 times!!! We have found what works (but is very messy) is the overnight Mayonnaise on the hair with a showercap. Yes, it smothers them and kills them...then comes the several days of 4 hour nit picking sessions. Again a week ago, I found her to have lice, during a routine lice check...poor kid thinks I'm paranoid but can you blame me!?! Once I found an egg I decided to buy Lice Md so I could get started on picking immediately and not wait til the Mayo took affect the next morning. Within minutes the lice had died. Thankfully I caught those boogers early this time and only found 2 dead/dying lice. I then picked her hair for 3 hours and only found 2 eggs!!! Typically I don't ever use the nit comb. It really does no good as you have to pull the eggs off with your fingernail. I did go ahead and do the Mayo overnight thing, just to be sure. After washing her hair and blow drying the next morning, I did not find one single egg. I picked for another three hours and NOTHING! I either caught this case super early...or LICE MD IS A MIRACLE! Anyway, if she gets these boogers again I'm sticking with the same routine. We've never found anything that kills them so quickly and effectively! I keep checking her daily and nothing :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Works very well, September 28, 2011
This review is from: LiceMD Lice & Egg Treatment, 4-Ounce Bottle (Health and Beauty)
WE had the unfortunate need for this product when I realized my daughter had an infestation of lice in her long thick hair. This product turned us both into giant greaseballs BUT there were NO survivors all lice that came off of her head were dead and a huge amount of the nits came off as well. She began the day infested and ended the day with no nits that I could find. We will continue to monitor of course and keep you informed. We left the product in for an hour instead of just ten minutes and I was relentless in combing out every strand of hair several times. I also bought a metal comb instead of using the one in the box. I liked that it was safe-non toxic and actually good for our hair other wise (this is an ingregedient in many shampoos). It was also not very costly. If I ever have the misfortune of needing a lice removal technique again I will again buy this product.

I have used this product twice now and it has done a fantastic job each time. I left the shampoo on longer then what the directions said and there was not a live bug in my girls hair. This even helped getting nits out. Although combs are not effective for nits eggs you have to always pick them out by hand under a good light or outside under the sun. And if you let regular shampoo sit on the hair for a few min you can get the lice shampoo out easily with one wash

This stuff actually works. All the lice die, and they die right away. I've used the pesticide stuff, and it just doesn't work. They kill some bugs, but never all. That's because many lice have developed resistance. This stuff kills them in a different way, and it works. It's not quite suffocation, I think, but similar. You just find them dead and drowned in this goo when you comb through it. It doesn't kill the eggs, but it seems to loosen them well, so the comb removes mot of them. I follow up with nit picking, but find very few.

Combing is far easier than with pesticide brands. This stuff is basically an ingredient found in conditioner, so it is easy on the hair. No bad smell either!

5.0 out of 5 stars worked for us!, April 23, 2011

Treated our son with LiceMD and while the stuff is kind of messy (it is like putting a honey/oil mix in your hair), it certainly worked and it washed out easily (not so sure that would be the case with mineral oil...). I was happy to find a product that didn't contain pesticides. It seems people cannot agree on whether dimethicone-based products kill lice, but our experience was that they do. Adult lice we combed out after leaving the product on for 10 minutes were immobile and stayed that way after being put in a plastic bag.
