It sweeps you into the middle of a romance at well above the legal speed limits. Melanie Weber is about to marry . . . the wrong man. Marc's the one she loves, but he's made it clear that he doesn't have the same feelings. At least, that's what Mel thought. Now she's being kidnapped by the man who's held her heart for ransom for a long time. Will he let his hostage...

Marc McCoy & Melanie Weber were partners in the Secret Service. They were also lovers for nearly two years. Three months ago they had a conversation about love. Marc made it clear he didn't believe in love, did not want to get married or have kids. The next day Melanie was shot & very seriously injured. While in the hospital she found out she was pregnant. License to Thrill is the first of the Magnificent McCoys, a gorgeous group of lawmen brothers who promise Tori Carrington readers many hot, and steamy nights!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast-paced romantic intrigue, June 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: License To Thrill (The Magnificent Mccoy Men) (Harlequin Temptation) (Paperback)
Former Secret Service agent Melanie Weber loves her ex-partner Marc McCoy, but knows that she has no future with him. Three months ago, they argued over love and their relationship just prior to Mel being shot on the job. Now a healed, but pregnant Mel plans to marry her childhood friend Craig Gaffney in two days.

Marc realizes he committed a colossal blunder and wants Mel back with him. He carries an engagement ring and has studied women's magazines over the period of their separation to attain knowledge that will foster his cause. However, everything changes when Tom Hooker, the person who shot Mel, escapes custody, allegedly vowing to finish the job. Marc abducts Mel as she shares dinner with her future in-laws. He has to keep her safe even as he has to persuade her that he loves her and wants to be with her forever.

LICENSE TO THRILL is a fast-paced romantic intrigue with several interesting twists that will provide much reading enjoyment to romance fans. Mel is a delicious heroine and Marc is an interesting Bond-like character who believably turns shy when confronted by love. With novels like this one, readers will constantly crave more works by Tori Carrington.

4.0 out of 5 stars The second half of the book redeemed the first half., January 4, 2000
By
This review is from: License To Thrill (The Magnificent Mccoy Men) (Harlequin Temptation) (Paperback)
I wavered on whether to give this book a 3 or a 4, but by the end of the read, I was satisfied, so I upped it a star. The writing felt very disjointed for the first 100 pages or so, I didn't understand why the characters were acting as they were; I was frustrated by Marc's unwillingness to be honest with Melanie. I felt like I was missing the backstory tht made these two decide they wanted to start a romance in the first place. But, by the second half I felt like the book had settled into the saddle and I was in for a good ride (read). The second half wasn't good enough to forgive the first half, but the motivations became more clear and the characters felt more realistic. I'll try the next book in the series, but I'm not dedicated to Ms. Carrington's work just yet.

Marc did not visit her in the hospital and made no attempt to contact her since.

Melanie got engaged to an old friend in order to provide a stable life for her child instead of a father that doesn't want him/her. Two days before the wedding Marc kidnaps Melanie from the rehearsal dinner and handcuffs her to the backseat of his car. Marc doesn't have enough respect for Melanie's abilities as a Secret Service agent to tell her the reason is that the man who shot her has escaped from prison.

My problems:
We were supposed to believe Melanie had been some hot shot Secret Service agent but she's a complete wimp through most of the book. Neither Marc nor his brothers want to let her in on their plans even though it involves her in a major way.

Melanie wore the same short, tight dress through the entire first half of the book. The dress kept tearing, one rip alone was ten inches long. She couldn't grab one of Marc's shirts? She'd left 8 pair of shoes at his place yet she didn't have any clothes there? At one point Marc told her to strip as "punishment", which she did. It was all so degrading and diminished her as a woman, a person and a law enforcement officer.

Also, not wanting to give anything away, let me just say that towards the end something goes on that wouldn't have been possible due to height and weight alone and wouldn't have fooled anyone.

I've got the other books in the series and hope they will better than this one.

The magnificent McCoy men have loins of steel! Hey, this is a great bathroom reader. Very moving. Tori Carrington is to romance novels what stuffing is to turkey.
