Editorial Reviews

Oh-so-suave blond Jack Hofner and ruder, cruder Rowe Rickebacker are the L/R team, ace secret agents working for the Royal Family of Ishtar (a thinly disguised Great Britain). With some help from eccentric inventor Dez and the inevitably feisty Claire, they continually try the patience of chief security agent Camille. Like all good anime agents, they overstep their boundaries, run up bills someone else has to pay, employ an endless array of hi-tech gadgets, and assume foolproof disguises. Jack and Rowe have a certain rhinestone-in-the-rough appeal, but the series has a been-there/done-that feeling. Their adventures involving stolen antiquities, crime syndicates, and the mysterious figure of the "15 year Princess" lack both the noir drama of Cowboy Bebop and the take-no-prisoners silliness of Dai-Guard and the Patlabor series. Licensed by Royalty is mildly diverting at times, but never distinctive. (Rated 16 and older: violence, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
