Book Description

June 1, 1997
At the end of World War II, a series of courts-martial probed the infamous events at a U.S. Army replacement depot near Lichfield, England, characterized by The Stars and Strips as "a concentration camp run by Americans for American soldiers." This is a story of low courtroom schemes and high moral inquiry, a clash between strong personalities and stronger principles that intrigued the author then and will fascinate the reader today.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lichfield (The U.S. Army on Trial) (Perfect Paperback)
While a very interesting account of the Lichfield scandal, I had hoped for a more historical perspective vs. the lengthy trial information. It became very tedious and I actually skipped over many pages.
The book would have been improved, in my opinion, by interjecting more information about how the military rank and file was reacting to the trial(which was covered extensively in The Stars and Stripes at the time - including opinion polls), more info on the victims and perpetrators, and less focus on the trial and the big shots involved.I would find myself getting interested when the book ventured into other areas out of the courtroom, only to be dragged back, unsatisfied.
It also would have been a fine time to examine military justice in the combat theatres during WWII, a subject that has had very superficial coverage.
