I heard a song by Die Apokalyptischen Reiter on the March Amazon metal sampler. It's "Der Weg" (live) off this release.

So how to describe DAR? Well, they're a metal band, though very non-typical. There are influences from across the board, everything from ska to punk and Husker Du-type sound walls to (mainly) riff-heavy metal that varies in tempo from grinding to blasting it out, with some occasional jazz and piano thrown in. Maybe DAR *was* the influence... they've apparently been around since 1995 and are fairly known in Europe.

The singing is in German, which means you probably won't be singing these in the shower, though there are plenty of catchy hooks and melodies. It varies between growls and balladic singing. The themes are all over the place; this release has a lot of very uplifting songs; for example, "Der Weg" talks about extending you a hand and walking "the path" (der Weg) with you for a way, knowing that tomorrow will be a brighter day, and so on. I guess it helps to understand German.

I liked DAR right away. They have a very raw, edgy energy that makes it sound like they are putting a ton of passion into their music. If I were going to download only a couple of songs to sample without investing in an entire album, I would propose "Der Weg", "Ein Lichtlein", and perhaps "Soldaten dieser Erde" from the previous release, "Riders on the Storm". Enjoy!

For some reason, the song "Der Weg (live)" on this album speaks to me even though I can't understand a word of German. The voice and sound in the live version has an "epic" feel. It's like a heavy metal ballad.
