Editorial Reviews

Article in Feb 8, 2007 Billboard

Jeordie White (better known to Marilyn Manson fans as Twiggy Ramirez) has united once more with Masters Of Reality singer/guitarist Chris Goss and Hella drummer Zach Hill for the second release by Goon Moon, "Licker's Last Leg." Due April 28 via Ipecac, the disc isn't quite as strange as 2005's "I Got a Brand New Egg Layin' Machine," but is certainly still quirky enough to be unmistakably Goon Moon.

Most of the tracks from the new effort came from the same session as the debut. "Some of the music that was recorded on 'Licker's Last Legs' was recorded before the debut, but then the vocals were just put on a few months ago," White tells Billboard.com. "We'd revisit it over a period of time, which was cool, because then it changes with the styles. If you record something years ago, you're influenced by a lot of stuff that's going on, then you revisit it."

Musically, the album is a true musical potpourri, which reflects the group's across-the-boards influences. Among it, according to White: "a lot of the stuff that is kind of going up in Sacramento -- the scene that Zach is from. A lot of the new folk stuff that is coming out -- Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart. And then a lot of the weirder stuff -- Deerhoof was a big inspiration for a lot of it. And then you can't help the fact that I was in Marilyn Manson for 12 years -- I wrote a lot of those songs, so some of it will sound like that. And Chris' influences as well -- some stuff you might say sounds a little Queens Of The Stones Age-y, but that comes from Chris because he was part of Queens for a period."

The disc also includes a cover of the Bee Gees' "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You," which White chalks up to being a "huge Britpop fan. Where all those influences came from is really early Bee Gees."

With White having just embarked on a European tour as the bassist for Nine Inch Nails, Goss hard at work producing the next Queens Of The Stone Age album and Hill about to launch a U.S. tour with Hella, a lengthy Goon Moon tour seems out of the question.

But White is confident the trio will be able to play at least a few shows in support of the new album. "The Nine Inch Nails touring schedule is not too thick, so I think there are going to be some holes where we're going to be doing some shows this year," he says.

Product Description

Goon Moon is the spooky and dirgy alignment of a sorted and celebrated bunch. The band features Jeordie White, who is better known as Twiggy Ramirez from Marilyn Manson and current bassist for Nine Inch Nails, and Chris Goss, record producer for the likes of Kyuss and Queens Of The Stone Age, while also being the frontman of desert rock band Masters Of Reality. Musically, the album is a true musical potpourri, which reflects the group's across-the-boards influences. No denying the recognizable sounds of both NIN and QOTSA, but also the influences of the new folk scene such as Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom. With a lot of the weirder stuff being directly influenced by Deerhoof. Also, included on the sessions are Zach Hill (Hella), Josh Freese (The Vandals/A Perfect Circle/NIN), Josh Homme (QOTSA), Dave Catching (EODM/Mondo Generator), Whitey Kirst (Iggy Pop), and Peter Perdichizzi (The Flys). They include a cover of the early Bee Gees', Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You , which White chalks up to being a huge Brit-pop fan. With White being on a European tour with Nine Inch Nails, Gosshard at work producing the next Queens Of The Stone Age album, a tour seems out of the question, but they are confident they will be able to play at least a few shows in support of the new album.

Too often in music today, we become obsessed with the package. Is she cute? Is he mad, angry, nihilistic or otherwise angst ridden? If they're going to be cool in our book, they had better not say cheese when they're being photographed. We want them to be real and deep (see negative). We also want them to be good looking. Why is it that we're drawn to musicians who are good looking? Why does that matter when we're listening to a disc? I don't know what either of these guys look like, and I honestly don't care. They're musicians. I discovered Twiggy through Tweaker, an album that was highly promoted at my local record store. I also love just about anything and everything that comes from Mike Patton's Ipecac record label. This is something entirely different. On Golden Ball, for example, the two of them have managed to mingle a barber shop quartet style harmony as the background to the song; it then shifts and flips and flops all over the place. Best song on a GREAT album. I can definitely hear the Deerhoof by the way. An Autumn That Came Too Soon mixes a funky little bass line throughout the song. Prince once said of Led Zeppelin that their beauty lay in their diversity in that: "You felt a different color with each song." The same is true here. Each song has such a different vibe it almost sounds like a different group with each song as opposed to simply a different album from the same group. You can tell how hard these two worked on their craft in the confines of each song. Lay Down reminds me of a more listenable Arcade Fire. More interesting things happen in this song though, than anything in their monotonous, but brief catalogue. In an age where so little importance is placed on the craft of music, it's invigorating to hear that two guys got together and placed such demands on one another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Coherent! Actually, it's fantastic!!!, June 11, 2007
This review is from: Licker's Last Leg (Dig) (Audio CD)
I only recently became aware of Goon Moon, despite following Jeordie throughout his entire career as well as being a huge Queens of the Stone Age fan, and I came into this with rather low expectations.

Man was I wrong to have low expectations.

This album is equal parts fantastic musicianship, goofy humor ('We is hardcore' - 'Sadie is crazy, she likes to lick the ladies'), and flat out inventive weirdness. I think of it as a bizarre cross between Ween and Queens of the Stone Age with just a hint of old school Marilyn Manson. I guess what surprised me the most was just how much this album ROCKS. It's got that infectious rock n roll swagger to it that so many side bands and solo projects lack.

I downloaded this album just to check it out, and I'm so impressed with it that I'm buying it as well as Goon Moon's first record (which I hear is a bit more strange). Unfortunately this album is probably going to wind up being an over looked gem, but here you are, lookin' at it! Grab it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get This Album NOW!, February 7, 2008
This review is from: Licker's Last Leg (Dig) (Audio CD)
Goon Moon is fantastic, and although "I've Got A Brand New Egg-Laying Machine" is stellar, "Licker's Last Leg" cranks it up a notch. If I could give this album more than 5 stars, It would have it. No where on the songs contained within do you lose sight of the canvas, and the canvas yields a beautiful picture. The songs are individual in their own right and together they shine. (I like to listen to albums in their entirety, rarely do I pop in an album for only "a" song. I am not a "singles" person. Even on my Ipod I have whole albums.) "Licker's Last Leg" is infectious and perfect for any occasion. The wiggly rhythms and eccentrically gregarious beats found here are irreversibly catchy and on point. If you search for music a finger cannot comfortably sit on or music that screams, "I AM NOT AND NEVER WILL BE MAINSTREAM!" This album was made for you.

Forget the 128kps or 256kps downloads and buy this album to be sure You can hear all the goodies the way they were meant to be heard. If you enjoy music you can feel and music that grows on you and music you can repeatedly listen to without fear of it becoming stale, get this album now!
