5.0 out of 5 stars Klute covers the whole spectrum
I've seen (heard--whatever) Klute spin a few times, and he is unbelievable. Mostly dark , hard stuff (which is my taste--see his Breakbeat Science Exercise mix CD). This orginally produced music by him brings out some different tastes I didn't realize he had in him. I'm not going to get into his "collage of genres" cd (#2) [revision--I actually wrote this review before I...

2.0 out of 5 stars Definately not for Dieselboy fans
I saw that breakbeat science was putting out a debut album from Klute and I thought hey why not? He's matched up with some reputable people in the past so I saw no warning signs. This certainly did not turn out the way I had planned. There are some decent tracks 3(cool midbass scheme),5(almost catchy),6(synth trickery),11(hey a pretty tight bassline) off of Lie, Cheat...

5.0 out of 5 stars Klute covers the whole spectrum, June 26, 2005

I've seen (heard--whatever) Klute spin a few times, and he is unbelievable. Mostly dark , hard stuff (which is my taste--see his Breakbeat Science Exercise mix CD). This orginally produced music by him brings out some different tastes I didn't realize he had in him. I'm not going to get into his "collage of genres" cd (#2) [revision--I actually wrote this review before I had given disc #2 a full listen. There is some really good sh** here--especially for you breaks/ party dj's--that would probably never think to look in a D&B's producers direction for such trax--check "Artificial Sense" and "Overchoice"], but cd #1 has a lot of flavours on it. I'm not a big 2 step fan, but "Part of Me" is completely addicting. "Problem Reaction" and "Tacky"--("Ether" falls somewhere in between 2 step & jungle)-- are typical Klute standouts, and only he and High Conrast could even get me in the 2 stepping groove (if you can call it that). According to silly people who don't have a clue about music, D&B is fading as a genre. But w/ more producers like Klute (and High Contrast) around, it will be here to stay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply A Masterpiece, April 21, 2004

I'm not feeling the second house/downtempo CD, but as a fan of D&B, I can honestly say that the CD1 is one of the greatest albums I've listened to. This realization took a few listens to arrive, but it arrived none the less. Klute proves that not only is he an incredible producer, but also that D&B can become just as deep/complex/beautiful as any other sound the human ear can detect.
I say without a doubt purchase this CD if you are a fan of D&B, and esspecially if you are not. It's filled me with joy, energy, and above all else- inspiration. Just incredible.

Fav tracks: ALL (I mean that)

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing..., September 20, 2003
This review is from: Lie Cheat & Steal (Audio CD)
I'm just reviewing the first cd, Lie Cheat & Steal, since I mainly listen to drum 'n' bass. Lie Cheat & Steal contains some of the best drum 'n' bass tracks I have ever heard. This album is full of aggressive snares, deep & melodic basslines, and uplifing synth melodies. I usually listen to atmospheric dnb, especially stuff from Good Looking, but the agressive beats and deep basslines on this album are a welcome change from most of the stuff on Good Looking. What I love most about Klute's music is the deep, high pitched (relatively speaking), melodic basslines that he uses for most of his tracks. If you are into atmospheric dnb, but you are looking for drums and bass with a harder (but still melodic) edge to them, then grab this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Klute - Lie, Cheat & Steal - Atmospheric, Smooth & Soothing, December 12, 2011

Excellent buy for fans of Bukem and other more jazzy or smooth DNB/Jungle. Not too over-the-top or melodramatic; just right, good listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars You should be ashamed..., November 24, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Lie Cheat & Steal (Audio CD)
"There is alot to be shameful of in the music business. What was once simply a means of getting music to the people who want it is now nothing more than a burger chain. Sure this is no news as far as major record companies go but it seems the maketing disease has spread to all levels of music. In everyones desperartion to be bigger than human, the rot has set in and image and status have all but stolen musical content. Things sell these days more because people are told to buy. These are the times of lifestyles, logos, branding, market shares, and averages - and we are all effected. It's time to get back to the root of why we are all here... Music, pure and simple." Tom Withers aka Klute - CD sleeve notes of lie cheat & steal

The drum 'n' bass scene is becoming full of mediocre producers and DJs who rehash and remix the same stuff over and over again. Klute won't come out and say this directly, but I will. But like him, I won't name any names or labels. Do yourself a favor and pick this CD up if you are a fan of any type of dnb. Lie Cheat & Steal is full of distinctive, melodic, and deep drum 'n' bass, which Klute knows how to produce better than anyone else in my opinion. And always remember, "it is ALL JUST A MATTER OF OPINION."

If you're like the other clowns in this review list that like aggressive non-funky, non-musical D&B than don't buy this album. Then you too can be part of the reason that D&B fell off a cliff into machine grinding whackness. This CD along with Calibre, Carlito & Addiction, NuTone, the brazilian sound (patife, marky, drumagick), high contrast, london electricity, is what has brought a glimmer of hope back to the scene. For the non-musical clowns, you can stay down in the basement and grab each others @sses...because there sure as hell ain't no ladies down there.

4.0 out of 5 stars for the hater in you, January 25, 2004

This review is from: Lie Cheat & Steal (Audio CD)
you know why i don't get down with the jungle scene much any more...cuz i swear, more than any other music scene, there are tons of haters...snobs who won't dance they'll just stand there bickering to their friends about how DJ so and so doesn't live up to their standards instead of cutting loose and actually having a good time. that said, i'm sure klute would give a big middle finger to these types. this cd stayed in my cars deck for months and im just getting around to talking about. true there are some tunes which are only alright in my opinion it has a heaping of some of the most epic and catchy and good feeling tunes out there. oh yeah i love minimial techno, house blah blah blah but he should have definetly stayed away from releasing the second cd with the first. besides like one song that cd is dreck and is ignored in my mind. i guess there is a hater in everybody

2.0 out of 5 stars Definately not for Dieselboy fans, November 24, 2003

I saw that breakbeat science was putting out a debut album from Klute and I thought hey why not? He's matched up with some reputable people in the past so I saw no warning signs. This certainly did not turn out the way I had planned. There are some decent tracks 3(cool midbass scheme),5(almost catchy),6(synth trickery),11(hey a pretty tight bassline) off of Lie, Cheat & Steal that are pretty good but are rather lo key. You Should Be Ashamed ramps up from 7 on and then dies on the last track with some horrible synth lines on top a boring bassline (ugh trumpets too?). To be quite honest the tracks I have mentioned are cool(I use this loosely). But the majority of the others are just plain horrible like he fell asleep on the sequencer or something. Just boring no talent monotonous bleh. For your safety don't drive to this more than likely you'll pass out from complete boredom. THIS DEFINITELY IS NOT FOR DIESELBOY FANS. If you're looking for good d'n'b go for Bad Company, J Majik, Andy C, Decoder, Dieselboy, Dj Dara, Ed Rush + Optical, Stakka + Skynet, Ram Trilogy...

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy this cd, July 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Lie Cheat & Steal (Audio CD)
How is it that Klute transitioned from making the most amazingly oppressive Industrial noise to making easy listening Drum 'n' Bass? If you want aggressive dnb buy Friction, Kemal, Dylan, Twisted Individual, Dillinja, Black Sun Empire, Ed Rush, Usual Suspects, Stakka, Trace, Keaton, Hive, or even Dieselboy!
