Whatever you do...don't LIE to him!,
By
This review is from: Lie to Me (Paperback)
A madman serial killer enters the house of a wealthy entrepeneur and his beautiful young wife and takes them hostage. The following morning the rich man is dead, the killer is on the run and - although we as readers know otherwise - the wife states that her husband's dead was a suicide! What really happened that night? A worn out police detective is brought in and he spends the rest of the book - as does the reader - trying to solve the mystery. The strength of LIE TO ME clearly lies with it's main character Teddy Cammel. He is this great, completely three dimensional, and, above all flawed human being who becomes obsessed by this case (and as did I) will do almost anything to solve it. Did I also mention there's some pretty gruesome stuff in here, which I - as a horrorbuff - love, but will (maybe?) turn off more mainstream thriller readers? The serial killer is up to some nasty things when he's cutting of human hands and going after little kids, so all you 'Michael Chrichton/ John Grisham lovers' be warned! To me LIE TO ME is top of the bill. Great suspense and mystery and an excellent police procedural. David Martin really succeeds in pulling the reader into this story and I must say I finished the book in what must be record time.

A disturbing and twisted thriller,
By
This review is from: Lie to Me (Paperback)
"It's not the secrets that hurt, it's when the secrets get told..."I feel like I need to put a warning on this review similar to Law & Order SVU's opening line...*cue Law & Order pings* "In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous...." But, this book is more than just a story of catching the demented killer. Like Silence of The Lambs & Rules of Prey, this story deals with crimes and issues that are of a particularly heinous and gruesome nature. The portrayal of an abused young man who has grown up in and out of the prison system and is now an insane serial killer is mind blowing. If this book was a movie I'd have been watching it with my hands covering my eyes. As it was already, I couldn't muster up the courage to read the book after dark or before bed because I didn't want the details from the story making any cameos in my dreams. Lie to Me, is an incredibly terrifying, psychological thriller. Like an accident on the side of the road that you can't keep from looking at, this book is both creepy and enthralling. Just when you think you have an idea on where the author is going with the plot, he surprises you with the actions of his characters, leaving you unsure of what only moments ago you were certain. Readers will think to themselves "surely he isn't going to go there..." then Martin walks right up to the line and jumps over it with ballsy precision proving "Oh yes he did just go there!". The pace of the story was so intense and the characters and plot were equally driven. I found myself on an adrenalin high, rushing to the finish!

Excellent Thriller,

To be honest, I don't read many books of this genre. But, every once in awhile everyone wants a good mystery/thriller. And this is a good one.All I really ask of a book like this is that it offer some suspense. I am not someone who is easily fooled. I am well-known among my friends as being able to predict the ends of books and movies. But I have to admit that Martin does a good job of keeping key elements of the story just out of reach. But what raises this story above the typical is character. Detective Terry Camel is a fascinating, well-drawn person. He is known as the "human lie detector" but is it really a gift or is he faking or just burned out? And if he can find out the truth, how does he use this information and to whom does he reveal it? For a great detective, he seems more human than the type usually found in these novels. Combine Camel with a good cast of supporting characters and a grizzly enough crime and you've got a entertaining read.

The best ever,
This review is from: Lie to Me (Paperback)
This is one of the only books that's ever struck me with awe. I'm 15, and I hate reading. But this, this is truly a wonder. I never thought I'd be into the whole "Detective/Murderer" type of thing, but this book really changed my mind. I highly recommend it.

WOW!,

An avid Stephen King fan, I look for authors who write "real" and yet whose characters are somewhat surreal. This is the first David Martin book I've read but it won't be the last. Mr. Martin grips you from the very first page and you literally can't put this book down. I had it read in three days and would have had it done sooner had I not had a day job.Wonderful writing, great suspense, devine characters ... read this book. It's great.

FANTASTIC!!!!,
This review is from: Lie to Me (Hardcover)
The old saying is true, you can't judge a book by it's cover. The title sounded goofy, sounded cheesy....but what a fantastic book!! I only put this down to get some sleep. It's that good.Meet Dect. Camel. He's a burned out dect, who's just putting in the last few years so he can get full benfits when he retires. He's burned out. He drinks to much and sleeps at work. One day his life changes when he has to question a woman about the apparent suscide of her husband. A seral killer is lose. He has his sights on murdering a man....and get what's coming to him....what he think he deserves. And if he has to kill a few people along the way...so be it. This is a killer who's haunted by his past, and can't escape it. Soon Camel and the killer will come face to face.... Martin has an outstading writing style, and that's rare these days. The reader will be glued to the page with many, many, plot twists. As you become engaged with this book, you can't put it down. If you like books that has a serial killer, violent, twisted and sick, then this is a book for you. I highly suggest this book. I can primise you won't be sorry...then as you get into the book...make sure your doors are locked.

Mysterious yet Satisfying,
By Alexis C. (San Francisco, Ca.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lie to Me (Hardcover)
The book left me on the edge of my seat. The begining definately caught my attention and kept me interested in what actually happened to the real killer in the end. All the while secrets and lies were produced and descovered making the book that much more interesting to read. I couldn't keep my eyes off the mysterious and descriptive words as I turned each page eager to find out what happens next. "Lie To Me" is a cutting edge thriller, not for the weak of stomach. The graphic detail helped myself better visualize the characters and the plot the book was presenting. This was definately one of the best books I've read.

This review is from: Lie to Me (Paperback)
The book: Lie to Me is one that I am quite torn on. On the one hand, it deals with subjects that I wasn't too comfortable reading, and as such, almost didn't finish it.On the upside though, it does have a surprise ending that you could easily miss figuring out through the book if you're not paying attention. (Though personally I think that the author gives way too many hints at the big secret. I had it figured out about 2/3 way through the book) Worth a read, but get it from the library.

Excellent read, very difficult to put down once you start it. Just when you think you have the plot figured out, you get a curve ball in the way of a plot change. This book is very graphic and not for squeamish or readers prone to nightmares
