As Good As It Gets,
By
This review is from: Adjustable Mouth Block Plane (Misc.)
This block plane will make any woodworker happy. It has a 1 3/8" wide blade which is 1/8" thick to prevent chatter and is practically ready right out of the box. I gave mine a few passes over an 8000 grit water stone and it was ready to go. There's almost no backlash when adjusting the cut and the adjustable mouth makes it possible to make shavings as thin as 1/1000" thick. The plane is beautifully made and weighs in at about 1 1/2 pounds. But I have to take note of the description given...This is the #60 1/2 low angle block plane not the #9 1/2 standard plane and this one is most useful for end grain and/or easy to plane woods. If you need a standard angle (blade bedded at 20 deg.)or are working with figured woods or difficult to plane pieces you have to get the standard angle plane and this isn't it. However if you need a low angle block plane you can't do any better than this beauty.

Terrific tool,

After spending many hours fighting with a new Stanley Sweetheart low angle block plane, trying to get it to cut properly, I gave up on it and sent it back. Stanley 12-139 Bailey No.60-1/2 Low Angle Block Plane. I looked around at the low angle planes that are available today and decided on the Lie-Nielsen. Wow, what a difference! Out of the box, the Lie-Nielsen was producing very thin shavings, with no effort at all.
This plane feels very comfortable in my hands. The sole is flat and the blade is thick and sharp. What is really nice is the smooth operation of the adjustment controls. It is so pleasant and easy to use, getting good cuts, that I ordered the standard angle block plane direct from Lie-Nielsen, even though I already have a very good standard block plane. If you enjoy tools that are pleasing to the eye, then this plane is a sure candidate. On top of being a great working plane, it looks great too. The brass parts compliment the stainless steel and cast iron parts very well. The fit and finish of the tool is as good as anything I've seen, certainly better than most. With proper care, this tool will work well for you for many years and will do the same for your kids and grandkids. Heirloom quality, and great value for the money, is the way I'd describe this tool. The bottom line is that if you enjoy woodworking and don't enjoy spending hours working on a tool getting it to the point where it works properly, this is the tool to buy. I've seen opinions stating that cheaper tools are as good as the Lie-Nielsen or Veritas tools, after spending time and effort to "tune" them. Well, for this woodworker, that's a bunch of hooey. I've spent those hours on other tools, trying to get them to work properly. I don't enjoy doing that and I don't think that I should have to do that. I don't spend hours on my sanders and saws and other tools, getting them to work properly. They work the way they're supposed to work, when I buy them. Planes shouldn't be any different. I've spent many hours truing up the sole, sides and blade of a new Stanley #90 bullnose plane, Rabbet Plane, Bullnose, No. 90, after paying $110 for it. It still isn't performing as well as I think it should be. I really regret going cheap on this plane instead of buying the Veritas plane for another $50....

I purchased this block plane 6 months ago. It has exceeded all my expectations. I end up using everyday. I can't remember how I used to do jobs without it. The quality is outstanding. I will always purchase Lie-Nielsen hand tools. These are heirloom quality tools.

I bought the low angle version of this adjustable mouth block plan from Lie-Nielson website, they deliver really fast, ordered the 1st day afternoon, comes in on the 3rd day.
At the beginning I was so not sure to spend as much as $[...] for just a block plane, bought a $[...] Stanley one from Lowe's and disappointed, I decide to give a try to LN. When I see this in my hands, I find it is so different. The plane is really beautifully finished, everything is high quality. Can't find anything to complain about. I put some mirror finish the back of iron with 8000 grit water stone, and also a slight 2nd bevel. The bronze cap locks the iron securely with just a little turn. The blade doesn't move even a tiny bit, absolutely no chatter. I used it on the end grain of oak, it cut so easily and clean. Like everyone else said, use it is a true pleasure. I looked the Woodriver one WoodRiver Low Angle Block Plane with Adjustable Mouth, which is a lot cheaper but I find I don't like the Knuckle Cap that much. The Veritas standard block plane is little wider, I have smaller hands so prefer the L-N. This plane worth every penny, complete happy with it.
