Product Description

The Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Jack Plane is based on the Stanley 62. Ours is an outstanding plane. The low angle blade set with the bevel up (making this technically a block plane) was originally designed for end grain work. Our massive blade makes for very smooth cutting on end or long grain and figured woods. The blade is shipped with a 25° flat bevel. Using higher angles up to 40° gives excellent results on difficult grain. This can easily be done by honing a small secondary bevel at the higher angle. An extra blade on hand prepared this way is very handy. The generous handle is hand-shaped for a comfortable grip. The soles are ground dead flat. Design and workmanship combine to make a tool that will be a pleasure to own and use every day for years to come.

Beautiful plane July 31, 2008
By STOAK
I have been using this plane for a couple years now. After flattening the bottom (not far off but better after) it has become a favorite. I used it to flatten some small bird's eye maple drawer fronts recently (blade sharpened at a higher angle) when my jointer shredded them. It produced barely more tear out than my smoother (4.5 Veritas) and is much easier to move at the lower center of gravity. I finally put the 4.5 up and used only this finishing with a card scraper. In all fairness my new 4.5 was not tuned up completely but it was impressive even so. Definitely works better than my old stanley. I am not a purist and will pretty much use any tool but this is the plane responsible for me leaving the power tools on the shelf more often. It is easy to adjust for beginners as well. As far as planes go I am little more than a beginner but without this plane I they would have stayed on the shelf and Lie-Nielsen and Veritas would have much less of my money.

Low angle planes are versatile uncomplicated tools that will do a great job on end grain and long grain in most situations. This jointer weighs approximately 7-1/4 lbs. making it a powerful workhorse for heavy stock removal. I noticed a huge difference between the LN no. 7-1/2 Low Angle Jointer Plane and the regular LN no. 7 Jointer Plane; the LN no. 7-1/2 LA cut much smoother and with less effort. I also liked the fact that the LN Planes are always ready to use out of the box, the blades are almost perfect right from the factory! But it wouldn't hurt to tune up the blade to optimize the Plane's performance further.

The bevel up blade orientation allows you to adjust the cutting angle to deal with any type of wood and grain configuration you are working with. Seeing as the cutting angle is determined by the micro bevel vs. the bedding angle, you can freely change the cutting angle by sharpening the micro bevel.

This is my second LN plane (the first being the LN Low Angle Block Plane) and it definitely won't be my last!

The jack plane is positioned between a smoother and a fore plane, and should be able to do it all, even if it's not the best at any one task.

This particular model of jack plane is MUCH easier to adjust in between tasks than most. Ergo, as a jack of all trades, it can't be beat.

Some people recommend using this plane for smoothing. I can't go there. The sole is too long. But for general purposes, the fact that you can loosen/tighten the mouth on a whim is a big deal. Even if you won't get down to finish smoothness, you can adjust for situations where tearout would be a real bear for a normal jack plane.

Beyond the versatility (which really derives from the old Stanley 62, of which this is a copy), this tool is made to very exacting specifications (which the Stanley was not). It's very unlikely to chip out around the adjustable mouth, or anywhere else. If Stanley had gotten the structural details right the first time around, there might never have been a Lie-Nielsen. But in this real world, where Stanley decided to make stuff on the cheap, it is an incredible boon to the woodworking community that there is a company out there that resuscitates Stanley's good designs, but constructs them with a sense of pride.
