Book Description

June 1, 1995
In this fourth book of the Abe Lieberman Mystery series, the Chicago police detective finds he must catch a thief to nab a killer.

George "Pitty Pitty" Patnik was a thief who thought he had everything planned for a nice, clean in-and-out burglary. But that was before he heard the screams and saw the blood. Before the long knife came down again and again. Before the murderer realized he had an audience.

Now Pitty-Pitty is on the run - from the clever Lieberman who has figured it all out, from the murderer, and from the awful memories of what he's seen.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kaminsky's fourth title in his series featuring the long-suffering Chicago detective Abe Lieberman (e.g., Lieberman's Day, Audio Reviews, LJ 3/1/95) is a delight. When career burglar George Patnicks witnesses a murder in the course of a domestic break-in and Lieberman is assigned the case, their paths are fated to cross. As usual, complications arise in Abe's personal life and in the cases he is handling. Reader David Colacci makes all the right choices in his reading: he uses a slightly sardonic voice while infusing dry humor and resignation in Abe's dialog and handles the remaining characters with ease. Kaminsky's story is involving and character-driven, with a feel for their daily lives. A must for mystery collections.?Melody A. Moxley, Rowan P.L., Salisbury,

From Booklist

George Patniks is a professional burglar and a good one. Unfortunately, the day he has chosen to burgle the Rozier home turns out to be the same day Mr. Rozier has chosen to kill Mrs. Rozier. As the one witness who can't report the crime to the police, Patniks tries to keep a low profile, but Rozier can't afford to ignore such a risky loose end. Chicago homicide detective Abe Lieberman and his partner Bill Hanrahan immediately suspect Rozier, but they have nothing on which to build a case. Kaminsky captures the sights and sounds of his Chicago setting most convincingly. He guides us through the police-procedural aspects of the plot smoothly, while depicting enough of Lieberman's and Hanrahan's personal lives to make them fully realized characters. Despite the fact that Kaminsky has three successful series of mystery novels running simultaneously, he consistently creates interesting plots and believable characters. Highly recommended. 2.0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't make a BAD L&O or Cops Episode, July 4, 2006

Kaminsky is so off base from his normal quality of writing that this would make an embarrasing episode for Magnum PI. Everyone and I do mean everyone in this story is a stereotype and cartoon character (who would shame Homer Simpson).

The rich people are coniving backstabbers and obnoxious to boot. The asians are from an old Charlie Chan movie (including number one son). The hispanics are all petty crooks and gang members. The blacks are dumb as stumps and as animated as a ghetto blaster. The Jews are doctors (two), two of the 'alter cockers' are suing each other, and a Rabbi (reformed of course) is suing
Abe over the purchase of his house.

The whole story is the murder of the rich guys wife while he's at a chambre music concert. His house is full of valuable antiques and he's having an affair with his wealthy friend's (who dying of cancer) wife. The B&E guy (Polish or Ukrainian) who breaks in on the murder, lives at home with his mother (is a two time looser) and wants to be a painter.

Enough said! Too much said. Very sad, indeed.
