Liebling wrote about practically everything, as these essays from The New Yorker demonstrate; they range from a piece on racing written in 1937 to one on food written in 1962. Liebling was a thoughtful writer with a quick wit and a graceful style. His letters from Paris, which were composed at the beginning of World War II, are particularly interesting and poignant. And of course his essays on food are among the best ever written. Barbour and Warner have also edited A Neutral Corner (LJ 10/15/90), a collection of Liebling's works about boxing. Recommended where essay collections are popular.
