This review is from: The Lieder Anthology: The Vocal Library Low Voice (Paperback)
I love the heck out of this book. It is a lovely edition with Lieder in a lot of styles by a lot of composers, including Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, and Wolf, among others. There is a paragraph or two at the top of every piece talking about the piece, the composer, the poet, and other relevant information. It's great for singers from intermediate through professional levels as it provides enough editorial guidance and modifications to the music (compared with manuscript form) to help a singer interpret the piece without interpreting it for them. I really like that the authors have enough respect for their readers to indicate, with asterisks, places they have made edits and suggesting ornamentation, since this allows the singers to make their own decisions about which performance practices to use. This book also has a companion CD set with accompaniment tracks, which to me adds a lot of value to it, even though it's sold separately. There is also another companion book available that provides diction coaching, but I'm fluent in German so I didn't buy it and can't comment on it. If it's of the same quality as this book and the CD set, I'm sure it would be very helpful to someone who was just getting a grasp on German pronunciation. |
