Excellent lieder album, July 7, 2007
This review is from: Lieder (Audio CD)
American soprano Cheryl Studer has excelled as one of the most formidable Queen of the Nights produced on record not to mention her interpretations in Viennese operettas, but in this lieder singing setting, she proved that her silvery soprano is just as ideally matched when scored by a solo piano. Assisted very ably by Irwin Cage on klavier, Studer's limpid and sparkling voice is at its unblemished excellence around the time of this recording (1991). She proved that her musical understanding of the nuances of text and melody can rival the performances of Anne Sofie von Otter and Jessye Norman in the same repertoire. In "Im Fruhling", the piano-voice interplay exquisitely locates the beauty of spring in Ernst Schulze's poetry. In "Ganymed", she shows that her glorious voice can soar one minute and be meditative the next. Her moving and still-beauty rendition of the almost-18-minute song "Klage der Ceres" brought out the heartbreaking lament of the mythological figure Ceres for the abduction of her daughter Proserpina by Pluto. Studer's perpspicacious understanding of the texts and her moving and celebratory performances of the music of Schubert are the true standouts of this outstanding disc.
Highly recommended album.

The Loveliest of Recitals . . ., November 13, 2011
This review is from: Lieder (Audio CD)

The Loveliest of Recitals . . .
Virtually every vocal artist (of whatever range) makes at least one disc of Schubert's lieder.
(Notable recordings by
von Otter,
Schäfer,
Holzmair,
Ameling,
Fassbaender, and of course
Fischer-Dieskau quickly come to mind.)
Singers generally select a programme of songs which will showcase the unique characteristics of their instrument.
Sometimes they choose lieder with an eye towards the poetic connotations in the texts.
Usually several of the more `popular' or well-known songs are presented with one or two lesser-heard rarities.
For this 1990 Berlin recording Studer (who studied with
Irmgard Seefried and
Hans Hotter) framed a recital round Schubert's Romantic notions of Nature, carefully selecting several of the Schlegel settings in the
Abendröte Cycle.
The recital concludes with an extraordinary realization of the solo-cantata Klage der Ceres--(Schiller's narrative of Hellenic mythos)--which runs to nearly twenty minutes duration!

Studer's mellifluous spinto-soprano is comfortably lain towards the lower end of the type's range; and while she can easily spring to the starry heights, her natural rich timbre is lusciously delectable to the ear.
Her reading of Der Fluß is gorgeous in the extreme: oh-so-effortlessly she floats her vocalise on the light bateau of the gentle flow: this is `pure song' of phenomenal concentration of mood and fluency.
Another of Schubert's beloved water-songs--Auf dem Wasser zu singen--(in the rare key of ab-minor) offers Schubert the opportunity of capturing the impression of lapping waves in a rhythmical figure. The recurring major-key shift at the end of each verse is quintessential Schubertian harmonic thrill-inducement.
~~~
The recording itself is very well made with just the right miking and ambience to Studer's voice, with an excellent balance between voice and piano. Irwin Gage (pupil of Erik Werba) too gives a nice performance in this remarkable recital.
A beautiful performance, November 8, 2010
This review is from: Lieder (Audio CD)
Although Studer is perhaps better known for her operatic roles, she turns in a beautiful performance of these Schubert classics, bringing them to life with exceptional emotional range. Her passionate rendition of Ganymed alone is worth the price of the disc.
