More About the Author

I write books for one reason: My life has been completely transformed and I want to see that happen to everybody. In 1990, after having been a follower of Christ for 29 years and a Senior Pastor for 17 years, I came crashing down. I wanted out of pastoral ministry and even thought this thing called, "the Christian life" was over-hyped. I had tried everything to figure out how to live the way God expected me to live. There had been times I'd spent hours reading and even memorizing the Bible. I had spent all night in prayer at times. Once, I went through a phase where I even gave up TV and started talking like I'd swallowed the communion table - all King James Versionish. Okay, maybe not but I did try everything.

It was only when I began to understand grace in a way I hadn't learned growing up in church, attending a Christian University and then Seminary, or in 17 years of being a pastor, that things changed. What I began to learn then is the perspective I write from today. I hope you'll be encouraged and helped by my books. If you do, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for stopping by my Author's Page. -- Steve McVey

Buy just one of his books today and, like those, who have written their reviews above, you will find yourself wanting to buy all McVey's books.

There is plenty of religious jargon out there on the market. These books will talk about your life, the things you face and how the grace of God will guide you safely through them and enrich your life in the process.

Hopefully the provocative title, 52 Lies Heard in Church Every Sunday, will catch the attention of many, as it is a book that will clear up the thinking, and be of great encouragement, to many; many who may have been a bit misled, or mildly confused, and some who have been out-and-out misdirected.

Despite the negative title, 52 Lies is a powerful and positive pronouncement of why God's truth is so much better than our faulty misinterpretations, or unwillingness to simply take God at his word. Taking something of a back door approach, it zeroes in on some of the pop terminology that has invaded the church, along with many misrepresentations and misunderstandings. It focuses on the wonderful truths of God's love and grace, that unmerited favor, that we, in all our achievement-based humanness, have such a difficult time getting into our heads. It is a grace that carries well beyond our introduction into the faith. It is the power that keeps us going.

Some of the titles, or "lies", at first glance, seem innocent enough - "Salvation is Giving Your Life to Christ", "We Need to Continually Ask God to Forgive Our Sins", "Christ Empowers Us to Keep God's Law", etc. The fact that they sound acceptable at face value is part of the problem. And Steve takes you a step farther and unveils the "real truth" to fine-tune your understanding of what the scripture actually teaches.

Steve McVey is a voice that needs to be heard. He doesn't hold back, championing the message of the pure, unadulterated message of the gospel of the powerful grace of God. This book comes highly recommended, along with his other works, such as Grace Walk and Grace Rules.

I do not believe I can fully express in words how God has used this book but I will attempt it. When I first saw the titles of this books chapters my first reaction was "the author of this book can not be right." I studied each chapter in my Bible and I was amazed to find that most of what I had been taught in church and also what I had heard about God even outside of church was a lie. I had taken ahold of these lies and I held fast to each one. I found in my personal study from the Bible and from this book that I was being manipulated by man's ways and I was greatly decieved. Thank God that he works through this book to set captives free. If there is a word I could use to descride this book it would be "Liberating."

I love this book because it chisels away at traditional thinking that has caused many to misunderstand what the Gospel really is. Even if you don't agree with everything the author has to say, you'll walk away with some things to think about and it may completely change your thinking. This is an easy read, the chapters are very short and it's a book that will actually bring encouragement. Steve takes the focus off of us and puts it on the One to whom it belongs.

In my home the sign that I've picked up a really good new book is that my wife steals it from me before I can finish it. She doesn't tell me what she has done; the book simply disappears and I have to go hunting for it.

I was really enjoying Steve McVey's new book, "52 Lies Heard In Church Every Sunday--and Why the Truth Is So Much Better," until it disappeared. Who do you suppose just confessed to having stolen it?

Steve is an amazing writer with a particular knack for exposing deception which so commonly plagues and hinders the church. Reading each chapter in his new book is like taking a refreshing shower after a particularly difficult or trying experience. It's invigorating and liberating! I have yet to read more than one chapter at a time because there is so much to reflect upon after each one.

If you're looking for a book that's filled with "Ah-ha!" moments, this is it, chapter after chapter. Get it.

What a great read this book has turned out to be! At first glance, what appears to be attacks on true statements by the author, when examined in the light of Scripture and common sense, inevitably ends up showing how we have allowed ourselves to settle on believing half-truths and erroneous conclusions rather than ferreting out the real truth. This book is so liberating and mind-expanding that I've purchased 4 copies so far, and have loaned one to the pastors in my church. (Update 12 Dec 2011: Believe it or not, I've now bought 28 copies of this book, to give or sell to friends and pastors, and also possibly as Christmas gifts! I've sort of made it my personal mission to spread the great message this book carries.)

At the end of the book, just past page 245, the author directs us to his website (gracewalk.org), where one can at no cost access the video series where he personally covers all 101 lies in an abbreviated format, not just the 52 you've read about in this book. It turned out that 101 lies were just too many for one book.

First and foremost, let me hit the positives. This is a good book. It is strong on scripture and will make you think. Honestly, I have enjoyed it so far.

However, I have to stop reading it. I'm about halfway through, and it has become clear to me that I am reading it for the wrong reasons. As a man frustrated with the church at large, I picked this up with an ax to grind. I have been looking for a reason to be angry, and this book has helped.

Do I blame the author? Not in the least. This is a personal flaw, and I'm dealing with it. But I will be plain to say that it is not a personal flaw that is exclusive to me. If you are frustrated with church, if you are looking for a fight, if the title speaks to you the same way it spoke to me, pass on this book. At least, pass for now.

I'll be finishing it later. Just not for a while.
