2.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, The Lies Hustlers Never Tell Was Lackluster
I was torn with this review. I wanted to enjoy this novel. I believe The Lies Hustlers Never Tell could have been an outstanding novel because of its realistic story line. There are women young and old, educated and not, rich or poor who love and are attracted to "bad boys". There are "bad boys" who front, floss, and lie to get who and what they want. Unfortunately,...

This book is off the hook. I read it in one day. There is going to be a sequel and I can't hardly wait. Get the book. I must say that I could only get the book from Karibu books in Iverson Mall in Maryland. She was there doing a book signing. I think she takes the books with her. So get your copy.

Unfortunately, many of the characters were underdeveloped. This novel left me with more questions than answers. Here are just a few........What ever happened to Stacy? How did her life turn out? What happens to the friendship between Ace and Rick? Who killed Keisha? How did the relationship form between Rick and Keisha? How could Nikki's baby not be Ace's when there was no other relationship mentioned that Nikki was involved in? Does Ace ever find out about Nikki's baby not being his?

The Muslim and "street" terminology should have been explained for those readers who are not familiar with either. The grammatical and other editing errors took away from the book.
Good luck to Ms. Fennell on her sophmore project. I am looking forward to a much better novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A street novel with a moral, July 16, 2005

This review is from: The Lies Hustlers Never Tell (Paperback)
Ace, whose real name is Ali, is the modern day version of Don Juan. He has four women who all love him but he hops from woman to woman, taking what he needs, leaving nothing for them. Ace is also a drug dealer and hustler. He loves fine cars, pretty women, traveling and the latest fashions. It takes a lot of money to maintain his lifestyle and he is not above using his women to accomplish his goals. The women serve and additional service: Stacey, an accountant, helps him with credit cards and Keisha his street lady from the projects, takes up the slack for him in his hustles. He tends to leave messes behind, too: Keisha has two children she claims are his but the only child he recognizes is Samira's son, Little Ali. Nikki, the middle class, naïve, college student is pregnant and frightened. Ace keeps all his women on a short chain, controlling their every action and he is not above slapping them around either.

Tragedy strikes when Keisha is found dead on the side of a road and things start spiraling downward for Ace. Nikki wants him to just talk with her. His mother pleads with him to give up his hustling. Samira begs him to be a family with her and Little Ali, but Ace is addicted to the streets.

Shahida T. Fennell has written a very interesting novel about life in the streets. Her characters are real and you find yourself sympathizing with them while also wanting to knock them in the head for being so greedy and blind to the realities of life. In THE LIES HUSTLERS NEVER TELL, Fennell also includes poetry that compliments the progression of the story. The poetry literally tells the characters the real deal. The ending was a bit strange and I'm not at all sure I really know what happened. Otherwise, it is entertaining and a different kind of urban fiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Need More..., September 4, 2005

An easy read, I read it in a few hours and I was pulled into the story, which by the way is a good one. But I was disappointed by the way Shahida ended the story. There were too many unanswered questions concerning most of the characters. We should have had more background information on such characters as Stacey. She was a well off accountant, how did she meet Ace and why was she with him? We need the scoop on Rick, the so called best friend. He bedded Keisha, Ace's ride or die chick. What was the story behind that? Nikki's baby turned out to be Terrence's baby????? When? Why? Was there more to naive Nikki that meets the eye?

I liked this book but it cannont stand on it's own! I am sure most who have read this book, if they are being honest will agree there needs to be a sequel. I am looking out for Shahida's next project "The Truth About Cianni"

This was a very good book written with excellent morals. I found myself feeling sorry for the playa, playa, but you reap what you sow.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was I felt it needed one more chapter - maybe not even that - a few more lines to completely end it. However, if "The Truth About Cianni" is the sequel, I'm patiently waiting on it!
