5.0 out of 5 stars Succinct guide to finding success on your own terms
I've read many books on "success" and "purpose", but this book resonated in a way that others have not. Espuelas stresses that we should find what is important to us and take action to incorporate this in our lives. Although this sounds familiar, he presents this in a way that is doable. 1.0 out of 5 stars Use an IPO to become famous?
Fernando Espuelas is the pets dot com sock puppet of the Latino space. He's famous, but for what? Pets dot com blew up as yet another example of the excess of the dot com bubble. So did StarMedia. Espuelas is a brilliant public relations person, but I'd never hire him; he'd use my money to promote himself. I wish shareholders of StarMedia could recover all the free...

I've read many books on "success" and "purpose", but this book resonated in a way that others have not. Espuelas stresses that we should find what is important to us and take action to incorporate this in our lives. Although this sounds familiar, he presents this in a way that is doable. Personally books that are spiritual in tone really don't work for me. I want real action steps and this is Espuelas' method.

The reader who called Espuelas a failure is way off target. A failure is a person who never tries or completely gives up and this certainly doesn't describe Espuelas' life. Every successful person I know has failed (except for a really young person who has yet to really get out and do something with their life). Failures build success. This reader seems to have some personal issue.

If you are trying to find direction in your life, this book is worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a typical self-help book at all, June 30, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Life In Action: The 12 Voy Principles of True Happiness and Success (Hardcover)
More a philosophy of living your life well, for yourself, your family and your community. Although there's not a lot new here, I really admire the clarity of the writing and thinking. Unlike self-helpers, this isn't telling you how to get rich--in fact, Espuelas insists that if money's all you want out of life, you're bound to fail. This is about figuring out what will make you the most fulfilled human being you can be, then planning how to achieve that. If more people thought and acted like this, it'd be a much greater country than it already is. Lots of interesting historical anecdotes and stories keep it a vibrant read--in fact, the writing throughout is of a caliber you rarely see in these kinds of books. No, this book won't change your life. It doesn't promise to. But it may inspire you to do it for yourself, and that's a much better gift. Gracias, Fernando Espuelas. You're a model of what America's supposed to be all about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite interesting, May 21, 2004

This review is from: Life In Action: The 12 Voy Principles of True Happiness and Success (Hardcover)
I thought this book was a very interesting and easy read. It's not a book about "making money" or "losing money" - it's about coming to this country with nothing but the clothes on your back, and being passionate about creating. About finding HAPPINESS (bottom line) as it seems as though he has after traumatic periods in his life. Whether you've lost your job, your family, your motivation in life there are some very nice anecdotes here - and some very interesting tales of getting kicked down, and getting back up and just not stopping your belief in yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars breath of fresh air, June 8, 2004

This review is from: Life In Action: The 12 Voy Principles of True Happiness and Success (Hardcover)
A friend told me about this book. I don't read all that many self-help books, but she said it was a good read and helped her look at her life in a new way. Fernando Espuelas has a lot of powerful, inspirational things to say about getting on the right track -- whatever that may be. I thought the exercises at the end of each chapter were fun and really got me to focus on what I TRULY want out of my life. This is different than Dr. Phil or anyone else out there -- it's a man talking about his very personal struggles in life and sharing them so people like me can have a new, fresh outlook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, October 9, 2005

This review is from: Life In Action: The 12 Voy Principles of True Happiness and Success (Hardcover)
This lays it all out, simply and interestingly. It's powerful- to reconfigure your objective reality. All you have to do is put it to work. Somehow the process cuts quickly to the core negative thoughts and can eliminate self sabotaging behavior that is the result of imprisoning beliefs. We all have internalized some misbeliefs along the way, this quickly frees one from those bonds. This is one book that should be in every library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally something that's not the typical, February 28, 2005
This review is from: Life In Action: The 12 Voy Principles of True Happiness and Success (Hardcover)
I've read a few books of this genre before that try too hard to provide a path to "happiness" - most of it ends up being the same old trite nonsense: "do this and get your reward". This book is different -- more like a way to see how other people - famous and not famous - battled their demons, got knocked down and got up, and bushwhacked their way ahead in doing what they were passionate about - and THAT's the road to happiness you end up "finding" in the end. Kudos!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting tale....., February 25, 2005
This review is from: Life In Action: The 12 Voy Principles of True Happiness and Success (Hardcover)
A good fast read. The Starmedia part of the story provides a somewhat dramatic backdrop to what is the tale of someone who would not quit, and the role models he followed to keep moving ahead despite adverse circumstances. The not quitting part is the piece that particularly resonates, with examples from history of those who could have walked away and instead kept pushing forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, June 10, 2004

I just finished this book and thought it was terrific. I have heard the author speak before on TV. Seems like an engaging and genuine guy. The book is essentially his insights into basic human values and prescriptions for better living. I found the book quite useful because the author's rags to riches, Horatio Alger-esque, immigrant entrepreneur experiences brought a rich context and humanity to his advice. Overall, a relevant how-to guide on defining your life goals and maximizing inner success.

5.0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book, May 13, 2004

This review is from: Life In Action: The 12 Voy Principles of True Happiness and Success (Hardcover)
I came to this country and did not speak English well, and worked many jobs to pay for my education here. Mr. Espuelas's own story, like my own personal one, I can relate to. I have plenty of friends who came here and struggled too. Now I have a small business that I own, and a family that I love! Maybe someday I'll be wealthy, but that is not my mission. Really it is to be proud of what I can do for my self, the strength of my family and my group of friends. Every day I do the best I can which makes me happy and successful.

That is what I admire about this book and the idea of Life in Action. There are plenty of books to tell you 'how to get rich' but here is one that shows how to find out what is real personal joy for us and how to discover that.

5.0 out of 5 stars All about the questions for each of us, May 23, 2004
This review is from: Life In Action: The 12 Voy Principles of True Happiness and Success (Hardcover)
I think this book's great. It's simple and very logical. There isn't any "magic" answer- it's really about asking yourself the right questions to find your own way. It's not a personal "story" so much, as a series of what questions we need to ask ourselves and how we go about finding what makes each of us fulfilled in our lives.
