Book Description

December 22, 2009
Women started smoking in huge numbers in the mid-20th century, thanks to massive campaigns by the tobacco industry. The result has been generations of smokers whose health has been compromised and whose lives have been shortened. This book helps women understand why they smoke, how to quit, and how to make sure they don't start again. Smoking cessation expert Cynthia Pomerleau emphasizes proven strategies that demystify this most potent and pervasive of drugs. She explains the effects of quitting, how to do so without gaining weight, and the use of support systems and the latest drug therapies. Featuring photographs and illustrations, the book is divided into four sections: What Every Woman Who Ever Smoked Should know (covering the why); Managing Weight and Looking Great (personal transformation after kicking the habit); Special Concerns (dealing with relationships, depression, and other causes for concern); and A Lifetime Perspective (inspirational tips for maintaining a smoke-free life). Additional readings and resources help keep readers on track.

"...Smoking cessation has been the subject of many books, but few if any have addressed women’s special concerns so well. Highly recommended." —Library Journal

From the Back Cover

You can live –and live well– without cigarettes

You want to do it. You know you should do it. But especially if you’re a woman, you also know how hard quitting cigarettes can be. If you’ve tried to quit before and experienced weight gain, sadness, or other distressing symptoms, you may have decided to quit quitting.

Or maybe you’re already a former smoker, but you’re not quite satisfied with the way you look and feel. You wish you could somehow go back and get it right.

After two decades of research with women smokers and former smokers, Dr. Cynthia S. Pomerleau knows about the unique, multilayered nature of women’s relationship to cigarettes. Here, with real world understanding and comprehensive knowledge of current scientific findings, she offers the insights, tools and hope you’ll need to make that crucial transition.

Pomerleau wants every woman who smokes to become –and remain– a nonsmoker who feels good and looks great, but she also knows that one-size-fits-all prescriptions, scare tactics and “Just stop!” lectures don’t work for most women. Instead, she empowers you to
manage your weight and mood without cigarettes
replace the comfort of cigarettes with true self-care
create your own personal quitting style
look better and feel more confident than ever before

You’ll also find stories of other women who’ve been there, tips for handling partner and family relationships as you change, and information on how medications can help you reach your goal. Pomerleau proves that there is life after cigarettes –and that you can live it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource, February 8, 2010
This review is from: Life After Cigarettes: Why Women Smoke and How to Quit, Look Great, and Manage Your Weight (Paperback)
As an RN and a recovering smoker I am always interested in material on how to quite the habit. It has been my experience that most of the "How to Quit" material is sadly lacking. This is not, however, true with Cynthia Pomerleau's fine little book "Life After Cigarettes".

The main thing that sets this book apart from the others is the author's willingness to talk about the elephant in the living room; cigarettes are an effective method of weight control. The weight gain that follows quitting is a major factor in the high remission rate of quitters. This is especially difficult for females in this culture of hyper body awareness.

Dr. Pomerleau outlines a total program of diet, exercise and medication that are the tools for the lifestyle changes that are the basis for changing any major dependency. But most of all she provides insight into the process of going from being a smoker to being a non smoker.

The book includes an extensive section of additional reading and resources.

Overall this is a wonderful asset for the woman who wants to quit smoking and contains enough good general material to be of help to a male reader as well. I would recommend this to any smoker and especially to the women who smoke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Written for Women by a Woman Who Knows Her Stuff!, January 18, 2010

This review is from: Life After Cigarettes: Why Women Smoke and How to Quit, Look Great, and Manage Your Weight (Paperback)
Life after Cigarettes is aimed at women: why they smoke, why they should join the non-smoker trend, and how to do it for good. Here's my take on this book.

PROS:

1. Author, Cynthia Pomerleau, has created a short book, meaning it's not stuffed with fillers. She gets to the heart of the matter right away, and you can read the entire book in just a couple of hours.

2. Everyone's heard (over and over) of the dangers of smoking, but Pomerleau goes a step farther and focuses on the vanity reasons why women should stop smoking. For example, did you know that smokers typically have a larger waistline to hip ratio than non-smokers? Pomerleau shares plenty of new information, and she has the credentials needed to do it.

3. Although the book is geared toward women, there are many aspects that will be helpful and motivating for men. For example, they may not have as much difficulty with weight gain after quitting as women, but it's still a problem for quitters. Pomerleau offers practical solutions to deal with this problem. And don't forget -- men respond to vanity issues, especially in this troubled economy.

4. The book is packed with additional resources, so you won't have to go far to find the support you need to get through the process of quitting.

CONS:

I found no fault in this book, easy and quick to read, full of the latest information, and packed with additional resources.

I highly recommend Life after Cigarettes.

This review is from: Life After Cigarettes: Why Women Smoke and How to Quit, Look Great, and Manage Your Weight (Paperback)
This book is sensational!! I have never been happier to purchase a book that is so informative, has research to back its findings, and is written by a woman for women. It addresses our biggest fears about giving up that old friend cigarettes. I have recommended this book to many women who truly fear gaining weight and truly want to quit smoking. It is an invaluable resource for me. Thanks, Amazon, for letting me know it was available and for shipping it so expediently.
