4.0 out of 5 stars Innovative cover, great study aids and current translation...
I was very pleased with the actual item after searching for a new NLT Bible across the web. The cover is trendy and attractive (I bought the Brown/Camel) and the page weight is substantial enough to avoid accidental tears, but still feels "like a good Bible should".
I am especially pleased with the Life Application study notes. They have been helpful without...

I am especially pleased with the Life Application study notes. They have been helpful without being overly simplified or too complex. I am pleased enough with this one that I just ordered my wife a copy as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for those who have a hard time understanding, May 10, 2007
For some reason or other, usually the first bible that people are introduced to is the King James Bible. While a beatuiful translation, it is very difficult to understand since the language does not reflect the current times. With that being said, even modern translations can sometimes be confusing unless you are a bible scholar and know how to study and read the bible. You can sometimes get caught up in the story and not understand the deeper meaning.

This bible is perfect for those who are new to the bible, and who thirst to understand the real meaning of the principles and wisdom that overflows from every word.

As many times as I have read the bible I have often struggled to understand the true meaning, thus losing the opportunity to apply what I have read to my personal walk. However, the notes and learning tools in this bible has brought on a fresh conversation in mind. I can understand better, and make my own discoveries. My relationship with God is moving to a higher dimension because I can hear what He is saying to me. It all makes so much sense. After understanding and really grasping, you can really apreciate God's sovereignty and the perfect wisdom of His word.

If you have ever wished to pull the same application and meaning from the bible as your pastor does when teaching, then this bible will help you on your way. Do not be discouraged by others who may say that this translation is not authentic, or if some of the descriptions are not theologically correct. Just allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you, and you will get you what you need. Remember, its about your personal relationship with your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that is important. Any way that you grow closer to Him should be exploited at all costs. This bible will definitely help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good for helping make sense of the Bible, February 17, 2006
I love this Bible. I love the Lord but struggled with reading his word. I prayed about it...now with this Bible and by reading out loud (so I don't daydream) I have finally found a way to enjoy and understand God's word for me!

I'm just learning, and this bible is wonderful. It's written in language I can understand (much easier than the King James version), and the commentary brings everything into focus.
There is so much extra information in this book and the commenters really took care to try to explain so a newbie like me could understand.
The book comes with a concordence also, which is a God-send (sorry about the pun). I've been so engrossed in reading that I haven't even looked at the CD-ROM yet, but I'm sure it will have great information also.
If you want an easy-to-read bible that comes with fantastic study material, this is the right book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible, February 13, 2006
This Bible is wonderful! It's written in language that is easy to understand. Many people give up on trying to study the Bible because the language is so different from the way we speak now. You won't have that problem with the New Living Translation, and the notes are so helpful. Whenever I'm unclear about a verse or the context, I check the notes, and usually they help me to understand the meaning. They also help me to understand traditions of the time and meanings that were implied to the readers of the time. Whether you've been a Christian for 50 years, or you're only thinking of trying to read the Bible for the first time, or you're anywhere in between, this Bible is a great choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars best of two worlds, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Life Application Study Bible NLT, TuTone (Imitation Leather)
I like the second edition new living translation. It does add to the understanding of scriptures, along side the new american standard 1995 translation. The life application study notes are a plus, for it opens up a new way of thinking on how to apply scriptures to your everyday living. The bible itself seems to be a quality edition. Only time will tell if it holds up under constant use.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best!, November 8, 2006

This is the NLT Life App Study Bible in Camel/Camel Leatherlike. First of all, the colour of this Bible is fantastic---actual eye candy for me, so out of all the other Life App Bibles, this one drew me. I like these colourful Leatherlike editions, and they were made in South Korea, which means that the bindings are sewn, and will last. The ribbon-marker is a decent length. The translation is very, very well done, and professional. Now, remember, this is not a 'literal', or 'Formal Equivalent' translation. It is 'Dynamic Equivalence' or, it translates the thoughts of the Biblical writers. With that in mind, the New Living Translation is a re-do of Ken Taylor's Living Bible Paraphrased, which, in my mind, was the most exciting and riveting Bible there was. The NLT is much tighter, and can be used for study. However, along with the good comes the bad: the NLT uses gender-inclusive language, which lessens the accuracy of the text. It also translates 'hoi judaioi'(the Jews) as 'the Jewish leaders', to accomodate a wealthy Jewish-American whose main thrust in life is to get 'gentile' Bible translators to lessen the so-called 'anti-semitic' phrases in the text. And he has succeeded with the NLT as well as with the CEV. The notes are superb, as well as the character studies, which inform very well about different Biblical personages. The only thing I do not like about this Bible is the red-letter text in the New Testament. It almost makes the red-letter verses seem more important than the others, which is not good. On a practical basis, it is very glaring. I wish Bible publishers would publish just the black-letter text. This Bible is also not a lightweight. It's a good 2400 pages. But, all in all, this is indeed an edition to have. And the NLT is a good read. No seventeenth-century English to have to translate. And the colour on this one is a knockout.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ideal Study Bible, May 29, 2007

I received my NLT Study Bible with the beautiful tan leather cover about 3 weeks ago. I love reading it, as I find the NLT (New Living Translation) so easy to absorb and recall later. The notes and various study guides and commentaries really bring the Bible to life and will be very helpful for the new Christian, as well as those of us that have walked with The Lord for many years. I only have one "tiny" issue...that being as a 55-year old with not-so-perfect vision I find the print a wee bit small, but still very legible. There are large print editions, but they weigh a ton (bought one for my wife) and I wanted something a bit more manageable. Great version, great tranlation into modern American english, and a very handsome tan leather cover.

It delivers on what I'd needed. Thoroughly understandable written English, but seems to still retain all of the "Holiness" of the KJV, and even annotates where liberties with words have been taken, referring back to originals in footnotes. Application notes are copious, for deeper understanding, and cross-referencing is amazing. A huge "index" or concordance, lots of maps and special features throughout, like a chart of miracles Jesus performed, all the prophecies He fulfilled, chapter intros, a harmony of the gospels (numbers events through all four in chronological order in Jesus' life.) The same harmony device is used for events in Kings and Chronicles. Plenty of timelines too. I prefer this to the NIV, for sheer understandability, especially for beginners. I speak 3 languages, but I prefer not to have to puzzle out meanings in basic sentence structure, etc. If you want an exceptionally deep further study of the verse-by verse, I'd suggest Matthew Henry's Commentary, but this Bible seems more than sufficient for most general purposes. I gives great spiritual, bilical, geographical, cultural, and chronological context, and the snazzy leather cover is an aesthetic treat, and allows the Book to lie open nicely.
