Book Description

October 2000 7 and upEye on the Universe
Who hasn't wondered what it's like to be an astronaut? This book explains how candidates train to become astronauts or "star sailors." It looks at how they prepare for a mission, what they do in space, and what they experience along the way. Kids will love discovering how astronauts eat, sleep, and spend their day in weightless conditions. Engaging photographs and clearly written text will help hopeful young astronauts decide if they, too, have the "right stuff."

Space walking Astronauts space walk, or move around outside the Shuttle, to perform jobs such as repairing satellites. They wear space suits, which allow them to breathe and control their body temperature outside the spacecraft. Astronauts use handholds and footholds to crawl around the outside of the Shuttle. Space suits weigh 300 pounds (136 kg) on Earth, but they weigh almost nothing in space!
