Book Description

March 27, 1997
This is the first book-length study in any language about this Russian artist--Marius Petipa's colleague and Tchaikovsky's collaborator--who is widely celebrated and yet virtually unknown. It follows Ivanov from his infancy in a St Petersburg foundling home through to his career as a dancer, rgisseur, and choreographer in the St Petersburg Imperial Ballet. Ivanov's artistic world is described, as is his legacy-- some dozen works, including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and the famous dances from Prince Igor--that inspired Mikhail Fokine in the next generation. The book is richly documented, including the first complete publication of Ivanov's memoirs and hundreds of citations, many published here for the first time, from state documents, reminiscences, and criticism.

Review

`At last! A book that throws some light on the enigma of classical ballet, Lev Ivanov. Professor Roland John Wiley has, through incredibly detailed and extensive research in Russia, managed to piece together a much clearer picture of this master choreographer's life and achievements than has ever been available before. For this, I, for one, am hugely grateful ... the book is very easy to read and well divided into clear cut sections ... superb book ... It is a work which will ensure that Lev Ivanov's life and achievements will nolonger be overlooked or forgotten by present and future generations. It is a "must" for all who really care about classical ballet.' Peter Wright, The Dancing Times, June 1997

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding scholarship reveals life of unknown balletmaster, February 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Life and Ballets of Lev Ivanov: Choreographer of The Nutcracker and Swan Lake (Hardcover)
Lev Ivanov has been, for the last century, a known name but an unknown figure. As fruit of exceptional research into Russian archives, Professor Wiley has produced what he claims is a `first study'--which undoubtedly it is, but which future generations of dance lovers and scholars will recognize as a major work of historical and interpretative research. Ivanov must ever remain a shadowy figure. Contemporary comment and contemporary records reveal as little as one might expect about a man was only `second balletmaster'. His legacy to us, of course, is enshrined in two of the most popular ballet in the world--`Swan Lake' and `The Nutcracker'. Yet it is Professor Wiley who has now made clear the extent of Ivanov's contribution to the development and the greatness of the Russian imperial ballet at the Maryinsky Theatre. The book is essential reading for anyone concerned with ballet, and it is a work of both scholarship and artistic insights. --Clement Crisp, Ballet Critic, The Financial Times of London
