Until recently, political cartoons have fallen into a cookie-cutter dynamic, but Mr. Bors has found new approaches to the same material. His world view is less political, and more of a secular humanist - to him, no group is safe from scorn, no one life is worth more than another. He is never preachy, never, ever cliché, and isn't afraid to make you uncomfortable while making you laugh. This book is a combination of essays and political cartoons from the eyes of a Millennial - and apparently, they are not the lazy, shiftless or spoiled group that has been so demonized, and more of a focused, socially active group that wants better for our society. Whether you agree with his politics or not, you will be left thinking.

Something that stood out to me while reading Life Begins at Incorporation was a trip that Bors took to Afghanistan. I'm always drawn to travel anyway, but thinking about the danger and discomfort involved struck me more.

It occurred to me that going was representative of his commitment, and that's really the important thing about him. A lot of political cartooning is watered down, or it's completely wrongheaded in it's reactions. Not with him. Matt Bors is committed to his art, and he is committed to his education, in that he will review and study and travel to out of the way places if necessary.

It's not that I always agree with him, it would be weird if I did, but I can always respect his point of view, and he's right a lot.

There is plenty of humor and interest in the book. There is also some unpleasantness. Of course there is; it covers modern politics and war. However, these things need to be known. They need to be looked at. And a pair of brave clear eyes commenting on the scene can do a lot of good.

Okay, so, imagine a street corner, with a dozen people putting up "Get Kony" posters and texting "Get Kony" to each others' phones. In the sky is a plane pulling a "Get Kony" banner. And strolling down the street, hands in his pockets, wearing his Texas cowboy outfit, whistling a tune, is George W. Bush. That's my favorite Bors cartoon. It's about American war crimes, about the righteousness with which Americans pursue other people's war crimes, and about the fickleness of Internet fads, all at once.

We live in a crazy world. These are terrible times for everyone but political cartoonists (and a few rich people). Matt Bors really gets it. He's on top of the big issues -- war, racism, and the economy -- as well as the smaller crazinesses, such as suspending six-year-olds from school for pointing fingers at each other in a weapon-like fashion.

Another reviewer (in a review that I otherwise loved) calls Bors "pessimistic." I respectfully disagree. He's not rosy-eyed, but he doesn't think it's hopeless. He wouldn't bother fighting for a better world -- visiting a war zone! -- if he were a pessimist.

He's also really, really funny, in his essays as well as his cartoons. He's what keeps me from sinking into utter pessimism. Get the book!

Hilarious, clever, insightful, pessimistic, and leftist. Everything you'd expect from someone who's spent many weary hours studying the current state of politics.
