Book Description

March 1993
Buddhism, one of the great religions of the world whose followers today are numbered in hundreds of millions, owes its origin to the inspiration and teachings of one man, Prince Siddhartha, who preached in India over 2,500 years ago and became known as the Buddha, "the enlightened one". Here Patricia Herbert tells the story of the Buddha's life as it has evolved over the centuries, incorporating legends, miracles and local variations. As the narrative unfolds, each episode is shown in double-page illustrations from some of the manuscript paintings in the British Library's Oriental Collections. Patricia Herbert is curator of Southeast Asian books and manuscripts in the British Library's Oriental Collections.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Herbert, who works at the British Library, has given us a marvelous visual introduction to the Buddhist manuscript art of Burma. She presents 30 double-page spreads from two of the British Library's most prized Burmese life of the Buddha manuscripts. Beneath each reproduction is an English translation of the text on the Buddha's life. A brief (11-page) introduction offers background on the Buddha's teachings, Buddhist art, and Burmese manuscript art, while a helpful appendix provides notes about each reproduction, both from a historical and an artistic standpoint. Though there are many books on Buddhist art per se, the manuscript art of Burma has been largely ignored. With its exquisite format, this book admirably fills that gap. A useful book for both art historians and lay readers, this is highly recommended.
