Book Description

June 10, 2003
In her first collection of essays, author Dean Kramer shares the victories and failures of day-to-day life with multiple sclerosis. At her home in rural Pennsylvania Kramer faces unexpected dilemmas, including choosing which shoes to wear when the choice can no longer be based on looks — yet you are not ready to dress like the elderly neighbor, and what to do when your scooter disrupts a hornets nest and running away isn’t an option. With beauty and joy, laughter and tears, Kramer lets readers experience life through her eyes.. Many books convey the struggles of living with a life-changing disability. But Life on Cripple Creek goes further to show that with inner strength and a sense of humor the intrinsic land mines one encounters with this disease need not be devastating.

5.0 out of 5 stars So helpful words cannot express, June 4, 2003
This review is from: Life On Cripple Creek: Essays on Living with Multiple Sclerosis (Paperback)
There are no words that can express how this book helped me. I have had MS for over 30 years and so often felt I was the only one who felt like I do. This book was so helpful I have sent one to each of our four grown children so maybe now they will understand why their mom is the way she is. As Dean says in the book & I have heard so often and for so many years, but you look so good. Thank you Dean you have made my life so much more understandable to not only friend's family but also me. I will treasure this book always. Susan

5.0 out of 5 stars A wry yet practical look at dealing with reality, February 9, 2003
This review is from: Life On Cripple Creek: Essays on Living with Multiple Sclerosis (Paperback)
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an incurable and often painful disease in which the body's immune system periodically attacks the body itself. Very highly recommended reading, Life On Cripple Creek: Essays On Living With Multiple Sclerosis is a profound, heartfelt, touching memoir by essayist and journalist Dean Kramer of the matter-of-fact daily trials of living with MS. From selecting shoes that don't aggravate MS-based pain, yet don't look like something a geriatric person would wear; to dilemmas in dating; to reacting quickly to the threat of a hornet's nest; the essays comprising Life On Cripple Creek collectively provide the reader with an individual testimony, a moving memoir, and a wry yet practical look at dealing with reality and making the most out of life.
